Shrek 5 Trailer Sparks Mixed Reactions Over New Animation Style
June 17, () — The new trailer for “Shrek 5” has received mixed reactions from fans, with many criticising the film’s new animation style.
Universal Pictures and DreamWorks released the trailer on June 16, giving fans a first look at the long-awaited sequel. The film is set to be released in theatres on June 30, 2027.
The trailer reunites original stars, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz as Shrek, Donkey and Fiona. It also introduces Shrek and Fiona’s teenage children, voiced by Zendaya, Marcello Hernandez and Skyler Gisondo.
While many fans are excited to see the beloved characters return, others have expressed disappointment with the new character designs. Some said the animation looks too smooth and polished and lacks the charm of the earlier films, while others compared it to AI-generated visuals.
The reaction is similar to that of an earlier teaser released in 2025, which also drew criticism over the characters’ updated appearance.

Some viewers have also raised concerns about the story, saying the trailer does not capture the same humour and fairy-tale parody that made the original films so popular.
Despite the backlash, many fans remain excited to see Shrek, Fiona and Donkey return to the big screen after more than a decade.
Since its debut in 2001, “Shrek” has become one of DreamWorks’ most popular franchises, with four films and several spin-offs.
“Shrek 5” will be the first main film in the series since “Shrek Forever After” was released in 2010.
