South African Jazz Icon Abdullah Ibrahim Dies At 91

June 15, () — Legendary South African jazz pianist and composer, Abdullah Ibrahim, has died at the age of 91.

His family confirmed that he passed away peacefully in Germany on Monday, June 15, after a short illness, surrounded by his loved ones.

Born Adolph Johannes Brand in Cape Town in 1934, Ibrahim enjoyed a music career that spanned more than seven decades. He was widely known for blending jazz with traditional South African sounds, creating a distinctive style that earned him global recognition.

Originally known as Dollar Brand, he changed his name after converting to Islam in 1968. He was also a founding member of the Jazz Epistles, one of South Africa’s most influential jazz groups.

His international career took off after he was discovered by American jazz legend Duke Ellington, who helped introduce his music to a wider audience.

One of his most celebrated works, “Mannenberg”, released in 1974, became a powerful symbol of South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle and remains closely associated with the country’s fight for freedom.

Former South African President, Nelson Mandela, once described Ibrahim as “South Africa’s Mozart.” He later performed at Mandela’s presidential inauguration in 1994.

Ibrahim remained active in music throughout his life, continuing to perform and record. His final public appearance was at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival in March 2026.

Paying tribute, his partner, Marina Umari, said: “Abdullah passed away peacefully with South Africa and its people in his heart. His love for his country never wavered, no matter where in the world he found himself.”
