Otedola, Rabiu-Linked Holdings Lead Shareholder Wealth Gains as NGX Stocks Rally

November 8, () – Nigeria’s stock market rally has significantly increased the paper wealth of major shareholders in some of the country’s largest listed companies, with Femi Otedola and Abdul Samad Rabiu-linked holdings emerging among the biggest beneficiaries in the available September 2026 disclosures.

A comparison of shareholding records and closing prices for September 30, 2025, and September 30, 2026, shows that Otedola’s disclosed holdings in First HoldCo Plc and Rabiu’s combined direct, indirect and related-company holdings in BUA Cement Plc recorded substantial increases in market value.

The calculations reflect the market value of disclosed shareholdings, rather than cash realised from selling shares. They also exclude dividends where the relevant qualification dates and shareholder entitlements have not been established.

Femi Otedola recorded one of the most significant increases among the shareholders examined, benefiting from both an increase in his indirect shareholding and a sharp appreciation in First HoldCo’s share price.

The company’s September 2026 financial statement showed that Otedola held 3.25 billion shares directly and another 8.89 billion shares indirectly, bringing his combined disclosed position to approximately 12.14 billion shares.

This compared with 3.25 billion direct shares and 3.49 billion indirect shares in September 2025, giving him approximately 6.74 billion shares at the time.

His combined holdings therefore increased by about 5.40 billion shares, representing an increase of approximately 80 percent. The effect was amplified by the bank holding company’s share-price performance. First HoldCo’s closing share price rose from N31.50 on September 30, 2025, to N159.90 on September 30, 2026.

Based on these figures, the market value of Otedola’s disclosed stake increased from approximately N212.4 billion to N1.94 trillion, a gain of about N1.73 trillion.

This represents an increase of more than eight times in the implied value of the disclosed holdings, although the figure is not equivalent to realised investment income.

Abdul Samad Rabiu and BUA Industries Limited also recorded a substantial increase in the market value of their BUA Cement holdings.

The company’s Q3 2026 financial statement showed that Rabiu held 18.97 billion shares, representing 56.03 per  cent of the company, while BUA Industries held another 13.46 billion shares, equivalent to 39.75 per cent.

The filing also separately disclosed 637.4 million shares held indirectly by Rabiu. Including this position, the combined direct, indirect and BUA Industries holdings amounted to approximately 33.08 billion shares.

The disclosed quantities were unchanged between September 2025 and September 2026. The increase in their implied market value therefore came primarily from share-price appreciation.

BUA Cement’s closing share price increased from N160 at the end of September 2025 to N297 at the end of September 2026. At those prices, the combined holdings rose in market value from approximately N5.29 trillion to N9.82 trillion, representing an increase of about N4.53 trillion.

The calculation includes BUA Industries’ stake and Rabiu’s separately disclosed indirect holding. It should therefore be interpreted as the increase in the market value of Rabiu-linked and related-company holdings, rather than a direct personal cash gain for Rabiu.

Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc provides another important example of how changes in shareholding can affect the value of major investors’ positions.

Its September 2026 financial statement showed that Dangote Industries Limited increased its holding from 8.12 billion shares, representing 66.87 per cent, in September 2025 to 14.39 billion shares, equivalent to 71.07 per cent, in September 2026.

Aliko Dangote’s separately disclosed holding also increased from approximately 653.10 million shares to 1.09 billion shares, representing 5.38 percent in both periods.

Together, their substantial holdings increased from approximately 8.78 billion to 15.48 billion shares, while their combined ownership rose from 72.25 per cent to 76.44 per cent.

The company’s issued share capital also expanded from 12.15 billion to 20.24 billion shares during the period. This means the increase in the number of shares held must be considered alongside the expansion in total issued shares when assessing ownership and wealth changes.

At the September 2026 closing price of N68, the combined disclosed holdings were worth approximately N1.05 trillion. A September 2025 valuation has not been included because the corresponding historical closing price requires confirmation.

Seplat Energy offers a different dimension to shareholder wealth creation through its dividend policy and a major change in ownership.

The company disclosed that entities controlled by Tony Elumelu, through Heirs Holdings and Heirs Energies, held an aggregate 21.07 percent stake as of September 30, 2026, following the acquisition of additional shares during the period. Seplat also announced a third-quarter dividend of 19 US cents per share, comprising a 5-cent base dividend and a 14-cent special dividend.

This represented a 153 percent increase on the 7.5 US cents declared for the third quarter of 2025.

The dividend announcement adds an income dimension to the shareholder wealth story. However, the amount attributable to Elumelu’s interests cannot yet be treated as cash received. The qualification date was November 12, 2026, meaning entitlement would depend on the shares held on that date rather than simply applying the dividend to the September 30 ownership position.

The banking sector also features prominently in the ownership structure of major NGX-listed companies.

Zenith Bank’s June 2026 disclosure identified Jim Ovia as holding approximately 5.80 billion shares, representing 14.13 percent of the bank. The same position was reported in December 2025.

UBA’s major shareholders include Tony Elumelu, whose disclosed stake was approximately 6.03 billion shares, or 13.65 percent, in the available ownership data.

These holdings make both investors important candidates for a broader comparison. However, a reliable September-to-September wealth calculation requires matched shareholding records and closing prices for both dates.

The findings underline the difference between market wealth and cash earnings. Share-price appreciation can substantially increase the value of a controlling shareholder’s stake without generating cash for that investor. Additional share acquisitions and dividend payments also affect the final outcome, but must be measured separately.

For that reason, the largest reported increase in market value should not automatically be treated as the largest realised gain. The more complete picture emerges when changes in ownership, market prices and actual dividend entitlements are considered together.
