Nigeria Pushes for Two Permanent UN Security Council Seats for Africa at UNGA 81

Nigeria has renewed its call for stronger African representation on the United Nations Security Council, demanding that the continent be allocated at least two permanent seats as part of efforts to make the global body more representative and reflective of today’s geopolitical realities.
Vice President Kashim Shettima made the demand during a session of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81), where he highlighted Nigeria’s position on the need for comprehensive reform of the UN Security Council.
The call reflects Nigeria’s longstanding advocacy for greater African participation in the decision-making structures of the United Nations, particularly on matters concerning international peace, security and global governance.
Nigeria maintains that Africa, despite its significant population, economic potential and contributions to international peacekeeping, remains inadequately represented among the permanent members of the Security Council.
The push for permanent African representation has remained a major issue in discussions on UN reform, with African countries seeking a stronger voice in decisions that directly affect the continent and the wider international community.
Shettima’s intervention at UNGA 81 places Nigeria once again at the centre of the continent’s campaign for a more equitable and representative United Nations Security Council.
