Emetu Urges Amaekpu Women to Back Otti, Labour Party Candidates

The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, has urged the people of Amaekpu Ohafia to sustain their support for Governor Alex Chioma Otti,  and other Labour Party candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Emetu made the call on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the 2026 Annual Home Meeting of the Amaekpu Community Women Council (ACWC), popularly known as Nzuko Inyom Amaekpu, held at the Ohafia Girls Model Secondary School, Amaekpu Ohafia.

The meeting, themed “Widow/Youth Empowerment – Reclaiming the Future,” brought together women, youths, widows, traditional rulers, political leaders and other stakeholders from the community.

Emetu said the people of Abia were beginning to witness the benefits of good governance under the Otti administration, noting that several development projects had been executed across the state.

He specifically highlighted the construction and paving of Ofali Road, rehabilitation of Ifuruaku Road and the establishment and equipping of a Primary Healthcare Centre at Ugwuorji, Amaekpu.

According to him, the healthcare facility would improve access to essential medical services and reduce the burden of travelling long distances for treatment, particularly for women, children, elderly persons and other vulnerable members of the community.

He said the establishment and equipping of the Primary Healthcare Centre demonstrated that the Otti administration’s development agenda went beyond physical infrastructure to include investment in the health, welfare and overall wellbeing of the people.

The Deputy Governor also announced that the Ebem electricity sub-station had been energised, explaining that pre-distribution measures were being put in place to ensure safe distribution of electricity to benefiting communities.

Emetu called on the people to support Labour Party candidates in the 2027 elections, including Governor Otti, Chief Dr. David Ogba Onuoha (Bourdex) for Abia North Senatorial District, Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa for Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency and Hon. Kalu Mba Nwoke (Etiokwe) for Ohafia South State Constituency.

He said the support was necessary to ensure continuity in the development programmes of the present administration.

“What we are asking from our people is continuity. We must support candidates who will continue this development trajectory so that the gains we are witnessing today will be sustained and extended to every community across Abia North and the state,” he said.

Emetu also said the Otti administration had cleared salary and pension backlogs inherited from previous administrations, adding that gratuities for outstanding periods between 2001 and 2010 had been paid, with another batch expected.

He thanked the people of Amaekpu for their continued support for the administration and urged them to remain committed to its development agenda.

Earlier, the Mother of the Day and wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Adaeze Chidera Emetu, commended the Amaekpu women and the Council of Chiefs for organising the empowerment-focused meeting.

Mrs. Emetu described women as the backbone of society and said empowering youths amounted to investing in the future of the community. She urged the women to promote love, unity and mutual support while also supporting Governor Otti, his deputy and other Labour Party candidates in the 2027 elections.

The Special Guest of Honour, His Royal Majesty, Engr. Ezieogo Awa Nwankwo Mba, Regent Ezieogo of Amaekpu Ohafia, praised the organisers for choosing a theme that addressed the needs of widows and youths.

He said the annual home meetings provided an opportunity for reflection, unity and meaningful community engagement, stressing that empowering widows would restore their dignity while investing in youths would secure the future of Amaekpu.

In her welcome address, the host, Ezinne Chief Mrs. May A. Nwosu-Mba, said the programme was designed to restore hope, build capacity and assure widows and youths that they remained valued members of the community.

She urged beneficiaries to take advantage of the empowerment opportunities, acquire useful skills and apply the knowledge gained towards building sustainable livelihoods.

The event featured a march-past by women from the 17 compounds of Amaekpu, drama presentations, a local cuisine competition, health talks and awareness campaigns on substance abuse.

The health talk was delivered by the Supervisory Councillor for Health, Evang. Chidinma Ume, while officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) sensitised participants on the dangers of substance abuse.

Among those who attended the event were Ugwu Ezie Nnenna Udonsi, wife of the Udumeze of Ohafia; Chief Dr. David Ogba Onuoha (Bourdex), Labour Party senatorial candidate for Abia North; Chief Mrs. Orieji Okwara Emele, who represented Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa; representatives of Hon. Kalu Mba Nwoke (Etiokwe); and the Mayor of Ohafia Local Government Area, Hon. Chief Eleanya Ojuu Kalu, alongside other prominent sons and daughters of Amaekpu Ohafia and well-wishers.
