…as He Woos Investors to Abia, Unveils Seven Sectors Set to Drive State’s Economic Boom

The Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has used his appearance at the Nigerian-British Chamber of Commerce (NBCC) “Meet the Governor Series” in Lagos to present Abia as an emerging investment destination, highlighting reforms, infrastructure and opportunities across seven critical sectors of the state’s economy.

The event, held on Thursday, September 10, 2026, and themed “Repositioning Abia for Enterprise, Industrialisation and Sustainable Economic Growth,” brought together investors, business leaders, development watchers, members of the diplomatic corps and other distinguished personalities.

The NBCC’s “Meet the Governor Series” provides state governors with an opportunity to engage directly with the business community, explain the economic advantages of their states and make a case for attracting investment capital.

For Governor Otti, however, the engagement went beyond a conventional investment pitch. His presentation offered an insight into the philosophy behind the reforms of his administration and the transformation he says Abia has undergone in the last 39 months.

The Governor identified agribusiness and agro-processing, trade and markets, creative and digital economy, manufacturing and industrialisation, small and medium enterprise growth, inclusive finance and diaspora investment and innovation as priority areas where Abia is seeking to attract fresh capital.

Declaring the state open for business, Governor Otti explained that his administration had concentrated on removing barriers to productivity, improving infrastructure and strengthening fiscal governance to create an environment where businesses can thrive.

He pointed to the state’s ₦1.016 trillion 2026 budget, with 80 per cent allocated to capital expenditure, as evidence of the administration’s emphasis on infrastructure and development. He also disclosed that Abia’s projected ₦223.4 billion internally generated revenue was expected to cover recurrent expenditure.

On infrastructure, the Governor said 414 roads had been completed, while another 82 were under construction, alongside the installation of more than 10,000 solar-powered streetlights across Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia.

He also highlighted investments in healthcare, security and public transportation, noting that Abia’s 15 per cent budgetary allocation to healthcare had contributed to the state’s strong performance in national health emergency preparedness.

According to the Governor, the state’s investment in road networks and green shuttle buses had also helped make public transportation cheaper, while reducing business overheads and travel time.

Beyond government infrastructure, Otti drew attention to Abia’s vast commercial and industrial potential. He identified opportunities in livestock ranching, dairy, cashew, cocoa, rubber, garment manufacturing, ceramics and leather works, while pointing to tourism assets such as Enyimba Hotels and Ibom Waterfall.

During the fireside chat, the Governor further highlighted the proposed Azumini-Obeaku Seaport, an industrial park and a medical city as projects capable of significantly transforming the state’s trade, logistics, industrial and healthcare landscape.

He also argued that businesses that previously moved away from Abia were returning because of lower transportation, rental and security costs, combined with rising population and increased public spending that were strengthening consumer demand.

The NBCC President, Abimbola Olashore, said Abia’s entrepreneurial spirit and Aba’s position as a centre for trade, manufacturing and indigenous enterprise provided a strong foundation for development.

Olashore said the opportunity was to build on these strengths and create an environment where businesses could scale and industries thrive.

He said entrepreneurs also needed an environment that would enable them to formalise and grow, stressing that the ambition of the business community must be backed by confidence in the operating environment.

“Investors and businesses require clear and predictable policies, responsive institutions, quality infrastructure, security, access to markets and opportunities for meaningful partnership.

“This is why the relationship between government and the private sector is so important.

“Government creates the enabling environment; the private sector brings capital, innovation, expertise and enterprise. Together, they can create sustainable economic value,” he said.

Olashore reiterated the NBCC’s commitment to serving as a bridge between business, government and opportunity, adding that meaningful dialogue must ultimately translate into meaningful action anchored on a shared vision for growth and prosperity.

Beyond the statistics and investment opportunities, the Governor’s outing offered five broader lessons about leadership and the emerging Abia story.

Leadership, as demonstrated by Governor Otti, is more than intellect. One of the most striking aspects of his engagement was his ability to simplify complex economic issues and connect them to the everyday experiences of ordinary people.

An accomplished economist and former banker, the Governor demonstrated that development is not merely about figures, budgets and infrastructure, but ultimately about improving the lives of the people.

His presentation connected economic growth with the realities of transportation, security, healthcare, employment, business costs and consumer demand, placing citizens at the centre of the development equation.

The Abia story itself is becoming an inspiration. The transformation taking place in the state is increasingly being presented as evidence that seemingly entrenched problems can be confronted and reversed through determined leadership and institutional reforms.

For many observers, the Abia experience offers hope that the same principles of accountability, infrastructure development, fiscal discipline and purposeful leadership can produce results beyond the state.

The message from the Governor’s engagement was clear: Abia is no longer asking investors to judge it by its past, but by the opportunities emerging from its present transformation.

Another notable feature of the engagement was the Governor’s willingness to acknowledge the contributions of members of his team. His reference to the value of “small, small ideas” underscored an important leadership philosophy: effective governance is not a one-man show.

By publicly recognising the contributions of his lieutenants, Governor Otti projected an administration built around competent individuals who are expected to bring sound judgement, expertise and long-term thinking to their respective assignments.

Perhaps the strongest takeaway for the business community was the picture of an Abia increasingly positioning itself as a serious investment destination.

The state’s manufacturing heritage, particularly in Aba, its expanding road network, relatively low transportation costs, improving security environment, skilled workforce and growing consumer market combine to create opportunities across multiple sectors.

The NBCC President’s remarks reinforced this argument, with his emphasis on Aba’s long-standing entrepreneurial culture and its capacity to serve as a foundation for a new phase of industrial expansion.

Perhaps the most interesting feature of Otti’s presentation was that he did not approach the engagement as a conventional sales pitch.

Rather than overwhelm his audience with promotional rhetoric, he calmly presented facts, explained the reforms underway and pointed to the opportunities available across the state.

The strategy was simple but powerful: provide the information, invite investors to see Abia for themselves and allow them to make their own judgement.

The Governor’s message was essentially an open invitation: come to Abia, examine what is happening, explore the opportunities and decide for yourself.

That understated approach may ultimately prove more persuasive than an aggressive marketing campaign.

With its expanding infrastructure, investment opportunities, industrial base and ongoing reforms, Abia is increasingly making a case for itself not merely as one of Nigeria’s 36 states, but as a state positioning itself for a new era of enterprise, industrialisation and sustainable economic growth.
