OLD PHOTO, NEW CLAIM: ABIA APC AND THE RECYCLING OF 2025 CROWD TO IMPRESS PRESIDENT TINUBU AHEAD OF 2027

The latest attempt by elements within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State to project a picture of massive grassroots support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid has triggered questions over whether the party is presenting a genuine picture of its current political strength or recycling old political imagery to create a misleading impression.

A photograph being circulated online on Sunday, September 6, 2026, purportedly showing a mammoth crowd at a recent APC mini rally mobilisation in Abia, has come under scrutiny after records indicate that the image is actually from an Renewed Hope Partners (RHP) inauguration held in Bende Local Government Area in 2025.

The photograph is not merely similar to the 2025 event. It is associated with the very gathering widely reported at the time as the inauguration of more than 20,000 members of the Renewed Hope Partners in Bende.

ABN TV published the report on June 1, 2025, under the headline, “Over 20,000 Join Renewed Hope Partners In Abia As Kalu Rallies Grassroots For Tinubu’s Vision,” with photographs and video from the Bende event. The report specifically identified the venue as Bende and described the gathering as the inauguration of more than 20,000 RHP members.

Vanguard subsequently reported that the Bende ceremony took place on June 1, 2025, and described an attendance of more than 20,000 people, while THISDAY also reported that the event was held at the Bende LGA football field and attracted supporters from across Abia.

That history makes the renewed use of the photograph nearly 16 months later particularly difficult to explain if it is being presented as evidence of a September 2026 mobilisation.

The central question, therefore, is simple: if the Abia APC has genuinely mobilised a fresh mammoth crowd in September 2026, why recycle a photograph from a political event that took place in 2025?

The controversy exposes what critics may see as a deeper problem confronting the Abia APC: the gap between political publicity and demonstrable grassroots strength.

For a party preparing for the 2027 presidential election, photographs can generate headlines, but they cannot substitute for actual structures, polling-unit presence, ward mobilisation and the ability to independently bring people into the streets.

The situation becomes even more politically significant because the strongest demonstrations of APC’s crowd mobilisation in Abia have historically been associated with areas where prominent political figures possess substantial local structures and influence, particularly Bende LGA, the political base of the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu.

Indeed, the June 2025 RHP inauguration in Bende remains the clearest publicly documented example of an enormous APC-aligned mobilisation in the state.

Contemporary reports described the event as drawing more than 20,000 people and featuring political stakeholders, community leaders and supporters from different parts of Abia.

That naturally raises another uncomfortable question for the Abia APC: where are the equivalent crowds across the other parts of the state?

If the party is truly enjoying a dramatic surge in popularity ahead of 2027, Nigerians and, more importantly, the APC national leadership should be able to see that strength repeatedly not through recycled photographs, but through fresh, independently verifiable gatherings across the 17 local government areas.

The situation is particularly sensitive because Abuja will ultimately need reliable political intelligence about the party’s actual strength on the ground. Inflated crowd claims, exaggerated mobilisation figures or recycled photographs may create an attractive narrative on social media, but they could also give national party strategists a distorted picture of the political terrain in Abia.

That is where the alleged recycling of the 2025 Bende photograph becomes more than a social-media controversy. Critics could argue that it raises questions about whether some elements within the state chapter are attempting to manufacture the appearance of a political groundswell that may not exist at the scale being advertised.

The irony is striking.

In June 2025, the RHP inauguration in Bende was already publicly documented as a major mobilisation for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The event was not hidden; ABN TV, Vanguard, THISDAY and other media platforms reported it at the time.

So, presenting images from that event as though they depict a fresh 2026 mobilisation risks turning what was once a genuine political gathering into what critics could describe as a recycled propaganda prop.

And there is another uncomfortable dimension.

The Abia APC cannot simply point to one spectacular gathering in Bende and use it as proof of statewide dominance.

BendeL GA has a unique political equation, with Kalu’s influence providing a formidable mobilisation structure. A crowd assembled through such a structure cannot automatically be interpreted as evidence that the same organisational strength exists across other Abia’s senatorial districts, wards and polling units.

The same applies to parts of Umuahia, where established political personalities and former office holders retain significant networks.

For the APC, the real test is not whether it can produce one impressive photograph. The real test is whether it can reproduce that mobilisation consistently, organically and transparently in Aba, Arochukwu, Isiala Ngwa, Ohafia, Umunneochi, and the other parts of the state. That is the difference between a crowd and a political structure.

A crowd can fill a field for one afternoon. A political structure must exist in every ward and polling unit. And that distinction is precisely why the alleged recycling of an old Bende photograph deserves scrutiny.

Rather than relying on images from 2025, the Abia APC should show Nigerians the September 2026 evidence: fresh photographs, fresh videos, identifiable venues, dates, locations and verifiable attendance figures. If the crowd is genuinely there, there should be no need to borrow yesterday’s photograph to prove today’s popularity.

For President Tinubu and the APC’s national campaign machinery, the lesson is equally important: political reports from the field should be independently verified before they are accepted as evidence of electoral strength.

The 2027 election will not be won on Photoshop, recycled photographs or social-media impressions. It will be won at the polling units. And that is where the Abia APC will eventually have to prove whether the mammoth crowds being advertised today are a genuine reflection of its grassroots strength or simply an old political photograph being given a new political life.
