August 10, () — Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on Sunday, received members of the Senator Magnus Abe-led Reconciliation Committee of the Rainbow Coalition at the Government House, Port Harcourt, in a move that further underscores ongoing efforts to consolidate peace and political stability in the state.

The delegation, led by Senator Magnus Abe, Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), held a closed-door meeting with the governor before participating in a formal group photograph at the Government House.

Although details of the discussions were not disclosed, the visit is widely seen as part of sustained consultations aimed at strengthening the reconciliation process that ended the prolonged political feud between Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

Committee Advances Peace Process

The Rainbow Coalition constituted the Reconciliation Committee to deepen dialogue among political stakeholders and ensure the implementation of the peace agreement reached after months of political hostilities in Rivers State.

The Rainbow Coalition is a cross-party political alliance spearheaded by Wike to unite politicians across party lines in support of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and his anticipated re-election bid while promoting political stability in Rivers State.

Sunday’s engagement with Governor Fubara is regarded as another milestone in the coalition’s efforts to build consensus, restore confidence among political actors and sustain the fragile peace that has gradually returned to the state.

The meeting comes barely weeks after Governor Fubara, who lost his 2027 reelection bid after he withdrew from the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries in May 2026, publicly declared his return to the Rainbow Coalition, formally aligning himself with the political platform following his reconciliation with Wike.

On July 22, during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Rivien Medical Industry project in Rumuosi, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, the governor announced his support for President Tinubu’s second-term bid and endorsed Kingsley Chinda as his preferred candidate for the 2027 Rivers State governorship election.

Addressing supporters at the event, Fubara declared that the political crisis in Rivers had come to an end and urged his followers to embrace the Rainbow Coalition.

“We have made peace in the state, and I am supporting our Rainbow Coalition,” the governor said, adding that President Tinubu remained “our president” and deserved the coalition’s full backing.

He also cautioned his supporters against associating his name with any political movement outside the Rainbow Coalition, insisting that he would not be part of any activity capable of creating fresh divisions in the state.

From Bitter Feud to Political Reconciliation

The relationship between Fubara and Wike, who played a key role in the governor’s emergence in 2023, deteriorated shortly after Fubara assumed office, triggering one of the most intense political crises in Rivers State’s history.

The rift polarised the state’s political landscape, with lawmakers loyal to Wike initiating impeachment proceedings against the governor on several occasions, while rival camps battled for control of political structures and state institutions.

The prolonged crisis eventually attracted national attention and prompted the intervention of President Bola Tinubu, whose peace initiative paved the way for reconciliation between the two political leaders.

Following the resolution of the dispute, the Rainbow Coalition established its Reconciliation Committee to foster unity, rebuild trust among political stakeholders and strengthen the coalition’s organisational structure as part of efforts to ensure the success of Chinda.
