10 Things To Know Before Trading This Monday

Nigeria opens a ₦1.75 trillion bond auction on Monday, with settlement scheduled for October 21.

Nigerian equities enter the week after a 0.33% decline, while weekly trading value fell approximately 38%.

September inflation eased to 14.63%, although energy prices rose 5.38% month on month.

Brent retreated below $108 in early Monday trading, while the Dangote Refinery IPO remains open until October 27.

October 19, () – Nigeria opens the week with inflation easing, oil near $110 and a ₦1.75 trillion government bond auction. Here are the figures and developments to watch on Monday, October 19, and through the week.

1. Government Offers ₦1.75 Trillion In Bonds Today

Monday’s auction comprises ₦500 billion in February 2034 bonds, ₦800 billion in September 2036 bonds and ₦450 billion in June 2038 bonds. Settlement is Wednesday, October 21.

Their advertised coupons range from 15.45% to 19%, but buyers’ yields depend on the auction prices. Watch the accepted yields and amounts allotted to assess demand; the offer size is not money already raised.

Annual inflation fell to 14.63% in September from 15.39% in August. Monthly price growth slowed to 0.06%, although energy prices rose 5.38% during September.

The improvement supports the case for examining fixed-income returns, but rising fuel costs could weaken subsequent progress. Businesses should compare the national figures with their own power, transport and supplier bills.

3. Brent Closed Near $110

Brent settled Friday at $109.86 a barrel, up 3.7%, amid Middle East and Russian supply concerns.

Higher prices can support crude producers’ revenue while increasing costs for transporters and manufacturers. Refiners depend on the spread between crude costs and product prices, so an oil rally does not benefit every energy company equally.

4. More Nigerian Stocks Rose Than Fell

The NGX All-Share Index lost 0.33% last week, closing at 247,539.73 points, even as 50 equities advanced and 30 declined. Banking losses outweighed gains elsewhere; the oil and gas index rose 3.13%.

Watch how widely any recovery spreads. A few heavyweight stocks can lift the benchmark without improving performance across most portfolios.

5. Equity Trading Value Dropped 38%

Weekly turnover fell to ₦98.09 billion from ₦158.28 billion, a calculated decline of approximately 38%.

That measures completed transactions, not capital permanently withdrawn from the market. For investors chasing recent gainers, check trading volumes and available orders: a rising quoted price does not guarantee an easy exit.

6. Banks’ CBN Placements Exceeded ₦6 Trillion

Banks’ net Standing Deposit Facility placements reached approximately ₦6.08 trillion on October 16, following a ₦2.408 trillion OMO repayment earlier in the week, according to Nairametrics’ review of CBN reports.

Monday’s bond auction offers one destination for available funds. The liquidity increase does not automatically translate into cheaper business loans; lending terms depend on credit risk and banks’ allocation decisions.

7. The Naira Reference Was Around ₦1,332

AIICO Capital’s October 16 report placed the naira at approximately ₦1,332 per dollar. This is Friday’s reference, not a guaranteed Monday transaction price.

Importers should compare executable bank quotations, charges and settlement dates. For holders of dollar investments, both the asset’s performance and the conversion rate determine the eventual naira return.

8. Dangote Refinery’s IPO Remains Open

The refinery’s offer closes October 27, at ₦525 per share, following an extension announced last week. Its revised allotment timetable remains indicative.

Unaudited nine-month results showed $4.73 billion in net profit, Reuters reported. Prospective investors should examine cash generation, expansion requirements and the sustainability of refining margins alongside that headline. Subscription does not provide immediate access to sell allotted shares.

9. Regional Markets Gave Different Responses To Oil Tensions

Saudi Arabia’s benchmark rose 0.8% on Sunday, while Egypt’s blue-chip index fell 2.6%, illustrating the uneven effects of higher oil prices and regional tensions.

For Nigerian businesses, watch freight quotations, insurance costs and delivery schedules. Diplomatic announcements may move sentiment before they produce any improvement in shipping conditions.

10. Tesla Reports Earnings On Wednesday

Tesla releases third-quarter results after the US market closes on October 21, with its management webcast at 10.30 pm WAT. It has already reported 486,532 vehicle deliveries for the quarter.

For Nigerian investors holding the shares directly or through funds, margins, cash flow and investment spending will help establish what those deliveries earned. Product announcements alone cannot answer that.
