“Reduce Food Waste, Dispose Refuse Properly” – First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Tells Nigerians

• First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has urged Nigerians to reduce food waste and adopt more responsible waste-disposal habits as the country joined the world in marking World Cleanup Day 2026.
• She said the call was particularly important amid climate change, conflicts and other challenges disrupting food production and supply globally.

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has urged Nigerians to stop wasting food and take greater responsibility for keeping their environment clean.

She made the call in a message marking World Cleanup Day 2026, observed on Sunday, September 20, with the theme “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities.” The global observance this year focuses on reducing food waste and promoting more sustainable communities.

According to the First Lady, the focus on food waste is timely as climate change, conflicts and other global challenges continue to disrupt food production and supply chains.

She said:

“This year’s focus on food waste is particularly important at a time when climate change, conflicts, and other global challenges continue to disrupt food production and supply.”

Oluremi Tinubu stressed that environmental cleanliness should begin from individual homes, urging households, businesses and communities to be more deliberate about how they purchase, prepare, consume and preserve food.

“Keeping our environment clean begins with reducing the waste we generate,” she stated.

She also urged Nigerians to dispose of refuse properly and adopt sustainable practices that can protect the environment and promote cleaner, healthier communities.

“I encourage households, businesses, and communities to reduce food waste, dispose of refuse properly, and adopt more sustainable practices that protect our environment,” she added.

The First Lady further called for collective action, saying responsible environmental practices would benefit both present and future generations.
