UMUAHIA — Governor Alex Otti has inaugurated the Labour Party Governorship Campaign Council for the 2027 elections, charging members to run an inclusive, issue-based and violence-free campaign.
Inaugurating the Council, Otti said appointment as member is a call to service, not an opportunity to be boss, and urged members to see themselves as best among equals.
He said while the State Campaign Council has been set up, real campaign will be driven from the polling units and wards.
“Everything about campaign is structured around party. It is only parties that run elections in Nigeria. Independent candidacy is not allowed yet. So you must work with the leadership of the party,” Otti said.
He directed appointees to return to their polling units, wards and local governments to set up all-encompassing structures that will include party leadership, candidates, stakeholders and pro-groups including Abia Arise.
He said the 2023 campaign was about promises, but the 2027 campaign will show tangible achievements.
Otti warned against propaganda and distraction, saying campaign will be based on issues.
“We deal with issues. When they run out of ideas, they activate propaganda. Don’t let anybody distract you,” he said.
He said his administration has made the state peaceful and will not tolerate violence, noting that he had at the last Security Council meeting, directed security agencies to provide a level playing field for all parties.
“Two wrongs cannot make a right. If you go out there to unleash violence, you are on your own,” he warned.
He said every local government has a commissioner and government appointees, hence campaign leadership goes beyond council members, and added that candidates are at liberty to set up their own campaign councils, saying “the more, the merrier.”
The Governor also announced the former Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu, as leader of the State Campaign Advisory Council.
Responding, Chairman of Campaign Council, Rt. Hon. Agwu U. Agwu, thanked the Governor for confidence reposed in them and pledged to exceed expectations.
He said the task is not about the Governor or council members but about Abia people, noting that the best thing that happened to state in 20 years is Governor Otti.
“Everywhere I go outside Abia, people tell me you are lucky, your state is the best. They say can you lend us your governor. That is not propaganda, that is truth. That is what is motivating us,” Agwu said.
He called for support and cooperation of all Abians to ensure success of Labour Party in 2027.
