Isaac Fayose has sparked reactions online after questioning the suitability of any African country to secure a permanent seat at the United Nations General Assembly.
In a statement making the rounds, Fayose asked which African nation could genuinely be considered for such a position, mentioning South Africa, Tanzania and Nigeria.
He particularly referenced the ongoing legal dispute in the United States involving historical records relating to President Bola Tinubu, using it to question Nigeria’s credentials for such a position.
His comment comes amid renewed attention to a US Freedom of Information Act case involving records held by American law-enforcement agencies. Recent court filings indicate that the FBI had records connected to a historical investigation involving Tinubu, although the documents do not establish that he committed criminal wrongdoing. The Presidency has also maintained that the matter is a civil records-disclosure dispute and not a criminal case against the president.
Fayose said:
“African countries don’t deserve any permanent seat at the UNGA. Which of them even deserves to be nominated? Is it South Africa? Is it Tanzania? Or is it Nigeria that FBI is chasing our President with his old records”
His remarks have generated discussion, particularly over Africa’s push for greater representation in the UN system and which country or countries could potentially represent the continent in any future expansion of the Security Council’s permanent membership.
