2027: Nigerians Are Tired of Failed Promises, APC Will Face Judgment at Polls — Kwankwaso

The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared that Nigerians are increasingly dissatisfied with the country’s political leadership, insisting that the 2027 general elections will provide an opportunity for citizens to assess the performance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kwankwaso, who spoke during a television interview in Abuja, said the growing economic hardship, insecurity and poverty across the country had created widespread frustration among ordinary Nigerians.

The former Kano State governor maintained that the political strength of the ruling party should not be measured solely by the number of governors supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, arguing that the people’s support would ultimately determine the outcome of the elections.

According to him, the NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate have intensified consultations and political engagements across the country as part of preparations for the forthcoming presidential election.

“Our candidate, and of course, my humble self, are working around the clock,” Kwankwaso said.

He explained that the party was concentrating on grassroots mobilisation, stakeholder consultations and visits to different states and local government areas, with plans to expand its activities ahead of the election.

Kwankwaso criticised the growing alignment of state governors with the ruling party, describing the development as evidence that some political officeholders had lost confidence in their ability to secure electoral victories independently.

He recalled his experience as governor of Kano State between 1999 and 2003, stressing that political officeholders should earn public support through their records rather than rely on the popularity or influence of a sitting president.

The former governor also dismissed suggestions that the widespread endorsement of Tinubu by political elites necessarily translated into grassroots popularity.

“He was talking about elites. We are talking about the masses. So you can see the fundamental difference,” he said.

Kwankwaso argued that political leaders living comfortably in major cities were sometimes disconnected from the economic realities confronting Nigerians in rural communities.

He cited insecurity, rising living costs, unemployment and poverty as major challenges affecting public confidence in the government.

The NDC vice-presidential candidate also raised concerns about possible electoral manipulation, alleging that some politicians were already boasting about their ability to influence election results.

He, however, did not provide documentary evidence or identify specific individuals responsible for the alleged plans during the interview.

On insecurity, particularly in Northern Nigeria, Kwankwaso said his party was developing a comprehensive policy blueprint to address the underlying causes of violence and instability.

He highlighted his administration’s investments in education, youth empowerment and cooperation among security agencies during his tenure as Kano State governor.

According to him, tackling insecurity requires more than deploying security personnel, as governments must also address unemployment, educational disadvantage and economic vulnerability.

Kwankwaso said committees within the NDC were already working on policy proposals that would eventually be presented to Nigerians.

The party’s preparations come as the NDC has scheduled the inauguration of its Presidential Campaign Council for October 20, 2026, following consultations over its composition.

The former governor maintained that the opposition party would continue taking its message directly to Nigerians, expressing confidence that voters would evaluate the government’s performance when they go to the polls.
