Disu Bans Unauthorised Videos, Live Streams By Police Personnel, Directs X-Squad, FID To Track Officers
June 23, () — The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has prohibited officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from engaging in unauthorised social media activities, including the creation of videos, live streaming, and other online content capable of undermining the image, professionalism and integrity of the Force.
The directive, announced on Tuesday, follows growing concerns within the police hierarchy over the increasing trend of serving personnel creating and publishing videos, conducting live broadcasts and engaging in social media activities while in uniform or in circumstances that clearly identify them as members of the Nigeria Police Force without official authorisation.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, the IGP emphasised that while social media remains an important platform for communication and public engagement, its use by serving officers must conform with existing laws, regulations and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.
Disu stressed that police personnel are prohibited from creating or sharing unauthorised content while dressed in police uniform, publicly commenting on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information or using their status as police officers for personal promotion, entertainment or commercial gain.
The police chief warned that such activities could compromise operational security, damage public confidence and erode the professional standards expected of members of the Force.

To ensure strict compliance, the IGP directed Commissioners of Police, Heads of Departments, Commanders and other supervisory officers nationwide to immediately sensitise personnel under their commands and enforce adherence to the directive.
He further warned that supervisory officers would be held accountable for any failure to address violations occurring within their jurisdictions.
As part of enforcement measures, Disu directed the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department, popularly known as the X-Squad, to strengthen monitoring of social media platforms and identify officers engaged in activities inconsistent with the ethical and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The Nigeria Police Force reiterates its commitment to discipline, professionalism and responsible public communication”, the statement read.
The Force also assured members of the public of its continued dedication to maintaining public trust, accountability and institutional integrity while promoting responsible conduct among its personnel both online and offline.
