Chess Titans Set for South-East Showdown as Abia Hosts FIDE-Rated Classics

The Abia State Chess Association, in collaboration with the Abia State Government and the Abia State Sports Council, will host the South-East Chess Classics, tagged “The Battle of Titans,” from 23rd to 26th September 2026 in Umuahia, Abia State. The prestigious championship is expected to bring together some of the finest chess players from across the South-East, providing a competitive platform for players to test their skills, strategies and mental strength against some of the region’s leading talents.

The tournament, which is FIDE-rated, is expected to attract chess players and officials from the five South-East states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo. With the FIDE rating attached to the championship, participants will have an opportunity to compete in games that contribute to their international chess ratings, making the event significant not only for the development of chess in the region but also for the individual careers of the players.

The championship will officially get underway with the arrival and accreditation of state officials, chess players and other participants on Wednesday, 23rd September 2026. The opening ceremony will be performed by the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Nwadinma Ananaba, who is expected to welcome the participating states and reaffirm the Abia State Government’s commitment to supporting sports development and creating opportunities for young people to discover and develop their talents.

The choice of Umuahia as host city is expected to further highlight Abia’s growing interest in the development of sporting activities beyond football. The championship will also provide an avenue for chess enthusiasts, officials and players from across the South-East to interact, exchange ideas and strengthen the bonds of sporting friendship among the states. Beyond the competition itself, the organisers hope the event will inspire more young people to take up chess and appreciate the game’s value in developing concentration, strategic thinking, discipline and decision-making skills.

The South-East Chess Classics – “The Battle of Titans” will be held at New Easter Comfort Hotel, 134/136 Aba Road, Umuahia, from 23rd to 26th September. With top players from the South-East expected to battle across the chessboard, the championship promises several days of intense competition, tactical brilliance and sporting camaraderie. The Abia State Chess Association, the Abia State Government and the Abia State Sports Council are therefore positioning the tournament as an important event in the region’s sporting calendar and a platform for strengthening the future of chess in South-East Nigeria.
