The jokes spread across social media shortly after the public offer opened, with new investors humorously presenting themselves as co-owners of the refinery and demanding updates on “their company.”

Some even joked about calling Dangote for board meetings and making decisions about refinery operations despite investing relatively small amounts.

During a conversation with Bloomberg’s Francine Lacqua at the 2026 Qatar Economic Forum, Dangote acknowledged the jokes and noted that he had started receiving calls about board meetings.

The development comes after the Dangote Petroleum Refinery IPO opened to retail investors on September 14, 2026, with shares priced at ₦525 each and a minimum subscription of 10 shares, costing ₦5,250. The low entry point helped trigger widespread participation and a wave of social-media humour.

The jokes have included Nigerians demanding operational reports, complaining about refinery staff and referring to themselves as Dangote’s partners.

Dangote’s reaction has further fuelled the online banter, with Nigerians joking that they are now preparing for their seats at the next board meeting.
