NUJ delegation inspects projects as part of assessment tour of Akwa Ibom’s 31 LGAs.
October 8, () – The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, has commended the Executive Chairman of Itu Local Government Council, Hon. Ubong Nkutt, for his leadership and development initiatives across the council area.
John gave the commendation on Wednesday, when he led members of the NUJ State Council on an assessment tour of Itu Local Government Area as part of the Union’s ongoing inspection of development activities across the 31 local government areas of the state.
The NUJ chairman, who congratulated Nkutt on his second year in office, said the tour was designed to enable journalists to see government projects at the grassroots firsthand, assess their impact and provide appropriate visibility for local government administration.

“The essence of this tour is to see development from the perspective of the people. We are here to inspect projects, listen to the leadership and verify what is being done on the ground. From what we have seen and heard in Itu, the administration has demonstrated a clear commitment to grassroots development”, John said.

Receiving the NUJ delegation at the Council Secretariat, Mbak Atai, Nkutt said his administration had, since assuming office on October 7, 2024, prioritised infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, economic empowerment, youth development, sports and security.
Among the projects highlighted was the completed and commissioned administrative complex at the Council Secretariat, comprising 30 furnished offices, as well as the renovation of the Councillors’ office block and old Council Block.
The Chairman also listed the upgrading of the Council Pavilion, perimeter fencing, internal roads and solar lighting within the Secretariat among the administration’s interventions.
In rural communities, Nkutt cited intervention at the Ntak Iyang Itam erosion site, provision of water and sanitation facilities at Ikot Adakpan Beach Market and the ongoing construction of a civic centre at Ikot Uso Akpan Itam.
He disclosed that the council’s potable water intervention was being extended across the wards, with six wards already covered.
In healthcare and education, the council chairman said his administration had renovated the Primary Health Centre, Mbak Atai, while providing assistance to indigent residents requiring medical treatment and educational support to pupils and students under the Itu Students Worldwide initiative.
He also mentioned skills training and internship opportunities for newly graduated nurses, alongside agricultural investments including ginger production and various entrepreneurship and transportation support schemes.
On youth and sports development, Nkutt said the council had supported athletes participating in the state sports festival, while some promising athletes had been placed on scholarships to enable them to combine sporting careers with education.
The council’s security interventions, according to him, include the establishment of a Forward Operation Base at Ikot Adakpan and regular security training for village youth presidents across Itu.
Nkutt said his administration was taking its cue from the development philosophy of Governor Umo Eno, adding that the council was committed to complementing the state government’s interventions by ensuring that the benefits of government reached residents at the grassroots.
The NUJ delegation subsequently inspected the administrative complex and other facilities within the Council Secretariat.
The engagement was attended by the Vice Chairman, Hon. Helen Nta; Council Secretary, Mr Imoh Okon; Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. Godswill David; Head of Local Government Service, Mr Dominic Utin; councillors, supervisors and other senior officials of the council.
