South African Man Laments Decline in Nightlife, Blames Xenophobic Crackdown for Economic Slowdown
A South African man has expressed concern over what he described as a sharp decline in nightlife activities and the dwindling fortunes of street vendors and informal traders across parts of the country.
In a video shared online, the man toured several business districts, revealing unusually quiet streets and commercial areas that were once bustling with customers. The footage showed deserted nightlife spots and struggling small businesses, painting a picture of an economy that has lost much of its vibrancy.
According to him, the downturn in patronage is closely linked to the recent wave of xenophobic attacks targeting Black foreign nationals, as well as the closure of businesses owned by foreigners in some parts of South Africa.
He argued that the absence of many immigrant entrepreneurs and workers has significantly affected commercial activities, particularly within the informal sector, where many businesses depend on a diverse customer base.
The development comes amid heightened tensions over immigration in South Africa. On June 30, several African nationals accused of being illegal immigrants were expelled from the country, a move that sparked widespread criticism and drew condemnation from many African leaders, who described the action as harmful to regional unity and cooperation.
The incident has continued to fuel debate over the economic and social impact of xenophobia, with many observers warning that attacks on foreign nationals and their businesses could have far-reaching consequences for livelihoods, investment, and economic growth in South Africa.
