Lagos Police Hunt Gunmen After Killing of NURTW Organising Secretary
The Lagos State Police Command has launched a manhunt for unidentified gunmen who killed Toba Ajiboye, the Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in Lagos.
Ajiboye, widely known as Toba Ijaya, was attacked on Ikorodu Road in the early hours of Tuesday while driving back from his childhood area in Fadeyi.
According to police, the attackers intercepted his white vehicle and opened fire, leaving bullet holes on the windscreen and body of the car. He was rushed to St. Nicholas Hospital on Lagos Island, where doctors confirmed him dead.
Police spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, said investigations are ongoing and security personnel have been stationed at key points across the state to prevent unrest.
The killing sparked tension around the hospital as supporters tried to stop officers from taking the body. Similar tension was reported in Mushin, Yaba, and Fadeyi.
Reacting to the news, Lagos NURTW Chairman, Mustapha Adekunle popularly called Sego, described Ajiboye as a loyal friend and ally, and expressed deep grief over the loss.
