10 rescued as 3-storey building collapses in Alakija, Lago

A three-storey commercial building collapsed Thursday morning at Alakija Bus Stop, Satellite Town, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State, trapping several persons under the rubble.

Ten persons have so far been rescued alive from the debris with varying degrees of injuries, according to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. The victims have been handed over to medical personnel for treatment.

Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Gbenga Omotosho, confirmed the incident in a statement posted on X on Thursday.

“Building collapse at Alakija. A three-storey commercial building has collapsed at Alakija Bus Stop, Satellite Town. Six people have been rescued from the rubble,” he said. “The search is on for others. Emergency workers are at the site.”

The building, which housed several small businesses and shops, came down around Thursday morning, leaving victims trapped underneath.

Rescue operations are ongoing at the scene as emergency responders deploy excavators to clear the rubble in search of more survivors.

“As of the time of this report, 10 persons have been rescued alive with varying degrees of injuries and have been handed over to medical personnel for necessary treatment,” the Lagos Fire Service said in a statement.

“Search and rescue operations remain ongoing as emergency responders continue efforts to locate, extricate, and evacuate any persons who may still be trapped beneath the debris.”

The cause of the collapse has not been determined as at press time.
