American Rapper Mystikal Sentenced to 20 Years for Rape

June 17, () — American rapper Mystikal has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to third-degree rape.

The sentence was handed down in Louisiana on Tuesday, June 16, in connection with a 2022 case involving a woman at his home in Prairieville, near Baton Rouge.

Mystikal, whose real name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, reached a plea deal in March that reduced an original first-degree rape charge, which carried a mandatory life sentence.

The agreement set a maximum sentence of 20 years.

Days before sentencing, Tyler asked to withdraw his guilty plea, saying he “did not have sufficient opportunity to fully consider the consequences.” The request was denied.

In court, the victim asked for the maximum sentence, saying Tyler attacked and raped her and prevented her from leaving by taking her phone and car keys.

In response, Tyler told the court, “If I did that to you, I deserve the max sentence.”

Mystikal has been in custody since his arrest in 2022.

He rose to fame in the 1990s and is best known for his 2000 hit “Shake Ya Ass,” which earned him a Grammy nomination.

He also received Grammy nominations in 2003 for his album “Tarantula” and the song “Bouncin’ Back (Bumpin’ Me Against the Wall).”
