How Beneficiaries Can Check Eligibility – OPay Warns Nigerians as FG Begins N50k Monthly Relief Payments

OPay says eligible customers will receive pop-up notifications on their app homepages to check their eligibility for the Federal Government’s N50,000 monthly cash support.

Customers who do not receive the notification are not eligible, while the fintech company says it has no authority to determine beneficiaries.

The company warns Nigerians against fraudsters demanding PINs, one-time passwords or payments to facilitate access to the relief scheme.

The Federal Government has commenced monthly N50,000 payments to eligible vulnerable Nigerians under its National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI).

November 03, () – Digital financial services provider, OPay, has explained how Nigerians can check their eligibility for the Federal Government’s N50,000 monthly cash relief, warning customers against fraudsters seeking to exploit the intervention as disbursement to vulnerable households begins.

The company said eligible customers would receive a pop-up notification on the homepage of their OPay mobile application, which they must click to access the next steps for the payment.

In a post published on its official X handle on Tuesday, OPay clarified that customers who cannot see the notification on their applications are not eligible for the intervention.

The company also warned customers against individuals and groups demanding sensitive banking information or payments in exchange for access to the intervention.

It cautioned that neither OPay nor its representatives would request customers’ Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) or One-Time Passwords (OTPs) to process payments under the scheme.

“OPay will never ask for your PIN or OTP to process a NERSI relief payment. Do not pay any agent or click unverified links,” the company stated.

It advised customers to check their eligibility only through its official mobile application or by dialling the USSD code *955*20#.

FG Begins N50,000 Monthly Disbursement

The development comes as the Federal Government commences disbursement of the N50,000 monthly cash support under NERSI, a presidential intervention designed to provide financial assistance to vulnerable households facing economic hardship.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Bernard Doro, announced the commencement of the payments in a statement on October 30, explaining that qualified beneficiaries would receive N50,000 monthly to help meet essential needs and cushion the effects of rising living costs.

According to the minister, the programme will be reviewed regularly, while the ministry is partnering with licensed digital financial service providers to ensure secure and transparent delivery of the funds.

Doro explained that beneficiaries would receive an SMS requesting their consent before the money is transferred directly into their bank accounts or mobile wallets.

He listed the approved financial service providers and their respective USSD codes for checking eligibility as ALAT by Wema (*945*23#), MoMo PSB (*671*0#), NairaGram (*726*00#), OPay (*955*20#) and Moniepoint (*557*327#).

The minister stressed that Nigerians do not need to complete any application process, pay a fee, or register through agents to benefit from the intervention.

He also warned against fraudulent messages and individuals attempting to collect money or sensitive personal and banking information from prospective beneficiaries.

Doro urged Nigerians not to disclose their PINs or Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs) to unauthorised persons and advised those uncertain about messages relating to the programme to contact the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222.
