Abia Intensifies Road Projects, Erosion Control as Government Moves to Cushion Flooding Impact
The Abia State Government has intensified work on road infrastructure across the state, with 46 direct-labour projects currently ongoing in various locations as part of efforts to improve road connectivity and address critical infrastructure needs across communities.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, while briefing journalists at Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

According to the Commissioner, although none of the 46 direct-labour road projects had been completed during the period under review, construction and rehabilitation activities were ongoing at several locations across the state.
He further disclosed that two additional projects had been incorporated into the maintenance programme of the Ministry of Works. The projects include erosion control works along Alayi-Ugwueke Road and Ezi-Alayi Road, both in Bende Local Government Area.
Prince Kanu explained that several other road projects were also at different stages of construction across Abia, noting that the heavy rains being experienced in parts of the state had affected the pace of work at some locations.
He, however, noted that construction activities were expected to gain greater momentum with the anticipated onset of the dry season, allowing contractors and government work teams to intensify operations across various project sites.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday, provided an update on the flooding being experienced in some communities across the state.
He explained that the current flooding was largely a natural phenomenon associated with the broader effects of climate change and was not peculiar to Abia or Nigeria, as similar situations were being experienced in different parts of the world.
The Commissioner, however, said the state government was implementing measures aimed at mitigating the impact of flooding and protecting residents and communities in vulnerable areas.
Particular attention is being given to areas around Ogurube Layout and Finbarrs Road in Umuahia, as well as some parts of Aba, where the government is working to reduce the effects of flooding and improve the resilience of affected communities.
The ongoing interventions form part of the Otti administration’s broader infrastructure and public utilities agenda, with road maintenance, erosion control and flood mitigation being pursued alongside other projects aimed at improving living conditions and strengthening infrastructure across Abia State.
