The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has appointed Dr Chimezie Godswill Okwuonu, a physician with the Department of Internal Medicine at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, and Chief Medical Director of Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Umuahia, as Chairman of its National Committee on Organ Transplantation Regulation.
The appointment, which covers the 2026–2028 tenure, was conveyed in an official letter issued by the NMA and signed by its Secretary General, Dr Tamunokuro E. Diamond, on behalf of the leadership of the association.
Dr Okwuonu’s appointment places him at the forefront of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s regulatory and ethical framework for organ transplantation, an increasingly important area of healthcare requiring robust standards, professional oversight and coordinated national policies.
As Chairman, Dr Okwuonu will lead the committee in developing recommendations for a comprehensive regulatory framework governing organ transplantation in Nigeria. The committee is also expected to review existing laws, regulations, guidelines and ethical standards relating to organ donation, procurement, allocation and transplantation.
Among the committee’s responsibilities is the development of standards for the accreditation, licensing and monitoring of transplant centres and related facilities across the country. It is also expected to formulate guidelines that will promote ethical, transparent and equitable allocation of organs to eligible recipients.
A major area of responsibility will be tackling organ trafficking, commercialisation, exploitation and other unethical practices associated with organ transplantation, while strengthening safeguards for both donors and recipients.
The committee will also recommend standards for donor evaluation, informed consent, confidentiality and the protection of donors and recipients, alongside measures to promote deceased and living organ donation through public awareness campaigns and culturally appropriate education.
Under Dr Okwuonu’s leadership, the committee is expected to examine the systems surrounding organ and tissue procurement, preservation, transportation, traceability and transplantation, while also recommending professional training, certification, continuing education and multidisciplinary standards for practitioners involved in transplantation medicine.
The committee will further examine financing, insurance coverage and affordability of transplantation and post-transplant care, as well as recommend mechanisms for national data collection, transplant registries, outcome monitoring, reporting and quality assurance.
Another key component of its mandate is collaboration with relevant regulatory bodies, government agencies, professional associations, transplant centres and other stakeholders in developing effective transplantation policies and regulations.
The committee is also tasked with identifying gaps in Nigeria’s transplantation capacity and proposing strategies for infrastructure development, research, innovation and appropriate public-private partnerships.
It will equally advise the NMA on emerging ethical, legal, technological and clinical issues in organ transplantation and submit periodic reports and actionable recommendations to the NMA President and the National Officers Committee/National Executive Council.
The appointment comes with a clearly defined performance framework, with NMA committees subject to evaluation every six months. The association reserves the right to reshuffle committees, dissolve redundant committees or change their leadership and membership where considered necessary in the interest of the association.
The NMA also stipulated that committees cannot incur debts on behalf of the association without prior written authorisation from the President.
Dr Okwuonu’s appointment takes effect upon his acceptance within 48 hours of receiving the appointment letter.
With the new responsibility, the Umuahia-based physician now assumes a national leadership role in an area that intersects medicine, ethics, law, public policy and healthcare regulation, placing the committee under his chairmanship at the centre of efforts to advance safe, transparent and professionally regulated orga
