NEMA, SEMA Give Relief Materials to Disaster Victims in Abia

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Abia State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), in partnership with the Federal and Abia State Governments, have started giving relief materials to people affected by disasters in parts of Abia State.

The beneficiaries include people affected by a fire outbreak in Umuahia South Local Government Area and those whose communities were affected by gully erosion in Ohafia Local Government Area.

The exercise is meant to give immediate help to the affected people and reduce the hardship caused by the disasters.

The items distributed included 25kg bags of rice, cartons of spaghetti, seasoning cubes, tomato paste, vegetable oil, salt and mosquito nets.

Speaking during the distribution, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Dr. Sunny Jackson, said the exercise was to provide immediate support to the people affected by the disasters.

Dr. Jackson thanked Governor Alex Otti and NEMA for their quick response and support to the affected communities.

He said the cooperation between NEMA and SEMA was important in making sure that people affected by disasters receive the help they need.

Also speaking, the member representing Ohafia South Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Kalu Mba Nwoke, thanked the state government for responding quickly to the needs of the affected people.

Hon. Mba said he had earlier reported the erosion and landslide problems affecting some communities in his constituency to NEMA and SEMA.

He thanked both agencies for responding to the situation and providing relief materials to the victims. He said the assistance would help reduce the suffering caused by the disasters.

In his vote of thanks, Chief Felix Jaja from Ohafia thanked NEMA and the state government for coming to the aid of the affected communities.

The programme was attended by the NEMA Rescue Officer for Imo and Abia, officials of SEMA, community leaders and other stakeholders.
