A Nigerian man based in the United States has reportedly discovered that his elder brother allegedly sold his shopping complex, which he purchased for ₦10 million, for ₦100 million without his knowledge or consent.

According to the man’s account, he acquired the property during a trip to Nigeria in 2020. Before returning to the US, he entrusted the property documents to his elder brother, whom he had trusted because he was involved in the transaction from the outset.

The man said that sometime in 2025, his elder brother contacted him and claimed that the shopping complex would be demolished because of an ongoing government road construction project.

Believing his brother’s explanation, he reportedly accepted the situation, especially as he was not in Nigeria to personally inspect the property.

However, upon returning to Nigeria this year, the man reportedly drove past the property and was surprised to discover that there was no road construction taking place in the area.

Instead, he allegedly found a large eatery operating on the property.

He subsequently made enquiries and reportedly discovered that the shopping complex had been sold to the eatery.

When he confronted his elder brother over the development, the brother allegedly admitted that he had sold the property for ₦100 million.

The revelation meant that the property, originally purchased for ₦10 million, had allegedly been sold for ten times its purchase price without the owner’s authorisation.

The incident has raised concerns about the risks involved in entrusting valuable assets and important property documents to relatives, as well as the importance of maintaining proper oversight of investments, even when dealing with trusted family members.
