Ohuhu Youths Unite for Sustainable Development, Celebrate 2nd Mega Youth Day

 

The Ohuhu community in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State on Saturday, celebrated its second edition of the Ohuhu Mega Youth Day, organized to promote unity and galvanise the youths towards sustainable community and national development.

 

The annual event, held at the Afugiri Central School Field, Ohuhu, Umuahia North Local Government Area, with the theme, “Youth as Catalyst for Sustainable Development”, featured the presentation of awards of honour to deserving individuals and stakeholders, as well as traditional and cultural displays.

The celebration also brought together prominent indigenes of Ohuhu, community leaders, youths and other distinguished Abians to celebrate the achievements of the community while renewing their commitment to its development and progress.

 

Speaking at the ceremony, the Labour Party senatorial candidate for Abia Central Senatorial District, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, commended the bond, unity and spirit of togetherness among the youths of Ohuhu.

 

He described the ability of Ohuhu youths to speak with one voice and pursue common goals as essential to the advancement of the clan.

Sen. Nwokocha, who was among those honoured at the event, said the collective spirit demonstrated by the youths was a major asset that could be harnessed to move Ohuhu and its people forward.

 

He also commended the administration of Governor Alex Otti, saying Abia was now standing on a solid foundation as a result of the governor’s intentional stewardship.

Sen Nwokocha said that the Otti led administration has “rewritten the Abia story for the good” and assured Abians that a brighter and better future lay ahead.

Also speaking, the Labour Party State Secretary and one of the award recipients, Mr Chuks Akamadu, described the celebration as a reflection of the rich cultural heritage of the Ohuhu people, whom he said were renowned as trailblazers with a tradition of integrity, hard work and enterprise.

Akamadu said the event underscores the importance of the youth in community development, community service and nation-building.

“It is good that the youth of Ohuhu are alive to their responsibilities as catalysts for sustainable development.

 

“It is also good that they wear the consciousness that the future belongs to them, and it is up to them to ensure that they design a future that will not only suit them but also suit posterity.

“I am very proud to be an Ohuhu man. This is one day that one again feels very proud to be an Ohuhu man,” Akamadu said.

In his address, the President of the Ohuhu Welfare Union, Youth Wing, Chief Uchenna Iheanacho, described the celebration as a day set aside for sober reflection, accountability, appreciation and renewed commitment to the development and advancement of Ohuhu and Abia State.

 

Iheanacho disclosed that his administration, through its “Operation Back to the Farm” initiative, had cultivated about 50 plots of cassava in Ofeme, in a move aimed at encouraging young people to embrace agriculture as a viable business opportunity capable of creating wealth, providing employment and contributing to societal development.

According to him, the youth wing had also intensified its campaign against drug abuse and cultism, while initiating various empowerment programmes, including vocational training and skills acquisition, ICT training for secondary school students, seminars and capacity-building programmes.

He appealed to stakeholders to support the youth body in taking its various programmes to the next level.

 

“Our Vision is an Ohuhu where no young person is left without hope, direction or opportunity.An Ohuhu where our youths are skilled, productive, drug and cultism free.

“An Ohuhu where our youths embrace Agriculture, Technology, entrepreneurship and education”, Iheanacho stated.
