2027 Coalition Push Gains Momentum As G100 Unites Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso, Others For Opposition Summit

August 10, () — The G100, a coalition of concerned Nigerians advocating stronger democratic opposition, says it has completed the first phase of consultations with leaders of six opposition political parties as part of efforts to build a united front capable of mounting a formidable challenge in the 2027 general election.

Among those consulted are the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso; as well as the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde.

The group also disclosed that it held separate engagements with the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and the Social Democratic Party (SDP), describing the discussions with national chairmen, presidential candidates and their running mates as frank, constructive and encouraging.

The disclosure was contained in a statement issued on Monday and signed by Salihu Moh. Lukman on behalf of the G100.

According to the coalition, the consultations followed its Open Letter to the Leaders of the Opposition, Leaders of Thought, Civil Society and Nigerians of Good Conscience, published on August 2, 2026, in which it canvassed what it described as the Doctrine of Necessary Democratic Opposition.

Confidential Talks to Build Trust

Explaining why the meetings were conducted away from public attention, the coalition said the sensitive nature of the discussions required confidentiality to allow participants to speak freely without the pressure of public scrutiny.

“We have deliberately kept these consultations away from the glare of the media, in recognition of the sensitivity of many of the discussions and the need to allow party leaders to engage frankly and constructively without the pressure of premature public commentary. We believe that, at this stage, protecting the integrity of the process is more important than publicising every meeting”, the statement said.

The G100 noted that the engagements revealed broad agreement among opposition leaders that closer collaboration would be necessary if they hope to present Nigerians with a credible electoral alternative in 2027.

According to the group, participants acknowledged that building such an alliance would inevitably demand compromise, accommodation and a willingness to subordinate personal and partisan interests to the larger national interest.

Opposition Summit Scheduled for Abuja

Building on the consultations, the coalition announced plans to convene a Summit of Opposition Parties in Abuja on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, where participating political parties are expected to begin structured discussions on the modalities for achieving greater unity ahead of the elections.

The G100 stressed that it was not seeking to impose any arrangement on the parties but merely providing a neutral platform for dialogue.

“The G100 does not presume to dictate the outcome of these conversations. Our role is to facilitate dialogue, build confidence and help create the conditions in which the participating political parties can openly consider the difficult questions of cooperation, sacrifice, accommodation and collective action,” the statement added.

It maintained that any framework eventually adopted must accommodate the legitimate interests of all participating parties while ensuring that the welfare and aspirations of Nigerians remain paramount.

Democracy Needs a Credible Alternative

Reiterating the principles behind its advocacy, the coalition argued that the Doctrine of Necessary Democratic Opposition is anchored on the belief that democracy thrives when citizens are presented with a viable and credible alternative capable of effectively challenging the party in power.

It warned that persistent fragmentation among opposition parties weakens democratic competition and diminishes voters’ choices.

“The consultations of the past week represent only the beginning. The task ahead will require patience, courage and, above all, sacrifice. The G100 remains committed to helping facilitate the process of unity among Nigeria’s main opposition parties and leaders in good faith and in the overriding interest of Nigeria and its democracy,” the statement concluded.

The G100 is a coalition of eminent Nigerians, advancing a strong opposition against the APC. Its primary focus is to pressure opposition leaders to abandon individual presidential ambitions and unite behind a single candidate for the 2027 general election, warning that continued divisions within the opposition could undermine Nigeria’s democracy and hand the ruling party an easier path to retaining power.
