The Abia State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Philemon Asonye, has commended Governor Alex Otti and his wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, for using the 2026 August Meeting to promote women’s empowerment and community development across the state.
Speaking at the 2026 Ukwa West August Women Meeting held at Obehie, Mr. Asonye thanked the First Lady for choosing Ukwa West as the first local government area to host this year’s programme. He described the decision as a great honour for the people of the area.
He said the August Meeting is more than a social gathering, explaining that it provides an opportunity for women to meet, interact with government officials, and discuss ways to improve their economic well-being while contributing to the development of their communities.
According to him, the programme has become an important platform for strengthening the partnership between government and women, while creating more opportunities for empowerment and inclusive grassroots development.
Mr. Asonye stressed that women play an indispensable role in society. Quoting an Igbo proverb, he said no family, organisation, or community can achieve lasting success without the active participation and support of women.
He also praised the impressive turnout, discipline, and colourful march displayed by the women during the event, describing it as a reflection of their unity, commitment, and enthusiasm. He added that the exercise also encourages healthy living and physical fitness among participants.
The Commissioner further appreciated the dedication of the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, to women’s development, saying her commitment has continued to positively impact communities across Abia State. He also acknowledged the support of the Wife of the Deputy Governor for contributing to the success of the initiative.
On behalf of the people and women of Ukwa West Local Government Area, Mr. Asonye expressed gratitude to Governor Alex Otti and his administration for the developmental projects being recorded in the area and across Abia State. He reaffirmed the support of the people of Ukwa West for the Governor’s re-election in 2027.
