2027: INEC Set to Publish Final Candidate List For Governorship, Assembly Polls

INEC is scheduled to publish the final list of candidates for the February 6, 2027, governorship and State House of Assembly elections on Saturday, October 10.

The commission says 21 of Nigeria’s 22 registered political parties nominated 936 governorship and deputy governorship candidates and 9,692 State Assembly candidates.

The publication is required under Section 32(1) of the 2026 Electoral Act, which mandates the release of candidates’ names at least 60 days before an election.

Political parties have 14 days after publication to notify INEC in writing, with an affidavit, if a nominated candidate’s name is missing from the list.

October 9, () – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is set to publish the final list of candidates contesting the February 6, 2027, governorship and State House of Assembly elections on Saturday, October 10, in compliance with the 2026 Electoral Act.

reports that the publication is required under Section 32(1) of the 2026 Electoral Act, which stipulates that INEC must publish the full names and addresses of all nominated candidates at least 60 days before election day.

The provision requires the commission to display the information at its relevant offices and publish it on its official website.

Section 32(2) of the Act also provides a procedure for political parties to address omissions from the published list.

A registered political party that discovers that the name of its candidate is missing must notify INEC in writing within 14 days of publication.

The notification must be signed by the party’s national chairman and secretary and supported by an affidavit.

936 Governorship Candidates, 9,692 Assembly Candidates

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, disclosed the number of candidates nominated for the elections while addressing a world press conference and stakeholders’ meeting on Tuesday.

According to him, 21 of the 22 registered political parties nominated a total of 936 governorship and deputy governorship candidates for the 28 states scheduled to hold governorship elections.

The parties also nominated 9,692 candidates for the various State Houses of Assembly.

The commission’s figures indicate the scale of political participation ahead of the elections, although the number of candidates nominated by each party and the identities of parties that did not field candidates in particular contests could not be independently ascertained at the time of filing this report.

The final list is expected to clarify the candidates officially nominated for the respective contests.
