Ogbonna shared the message on Instagram on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, describing Ekubo as his “best friend and brother” while reflecting on the pain of losing someone close.

“On May 11th, I lost my best friend and brother, Alexx. Nothing prepares you for a loss like that”, Ogbonna wrote.

Ekubo died on May 12, 2026, at Evercare Hospital in Lagos. His family said he passed away from complications related to advanced metastatic kidney cancer.

The two actors shared a close friendship beyond their work in Nollywood and appeared together in several projects, including “Royal Gift”, “The First Lady” and “A Man for the Weekend”.

They were also known for publicly supporting each other’s careers over the years.

IK Ogbonna’s Emotional Tribute to Alexx Ekubo

Ogbonna said losing Ekubo was an experience he was not prepared for, describing grief as something that changes how people view life and relationships.

“There are still moments when I instinctively reach for my phone, wanting to call you. Moments I hear something funny and think, ‘Alexx has to hear this.’ Then reality quietly reminds me. I can’t”, he wrote.

Ogbonna said his greatest comfort is knowing Ekubo lived a meaningful life and positively impacted those around him.

“My greatest comfort is knowing that you truly lived. You didn’t merely exist. You loved. You gave. You laughed loudly. You showed up”, he wrote.

He encouraged people to appreciate their loved ones while they still have the opportunity, urging them to express love, forgive quickly and spend more time with family and friends.

Ogbonna ended the tribute by thanking Ekubo for their friendship and promising to keep his memory alive.

“You may no longer walk beside me, but you will always walk within me. Until we meet again, my brother. Rest well. I love you, always.”
