Veteran Nollywood actor Joseph Okechukwu has weighed into the growing controversy surrounding the participation of Chinese nationals in retail trading in Nigeria, following a recent protest by some Igbo traders at the Lagos Trade Fair Complex.
Okechukwu alleged that the Federal Government facilitated the entry of large numbers of Chinese nationals into Nigeria with the intention of undermining businesses owned and operated by Igbo traders.
The actor’s comments come amid renewed concerns among sections of the trading community over the increasing presence of foreign nationals in Nigeria’s retail and commercial spaces.
According to Okechukwu, the situation represents a threat to indigenous entrepreneurship, particularly businesses associated with traders from the South-East.
He also alleged that some individuals and communities in the South-West were making their lands available to Chinese interests, which he claimed could further intensify competition with Igbo-owned enterprises.
Okechukwu argued that the South-East must respond by strengthening its own economic base rather than relying solely on external markets or investments.
He expressed optimism that the region could experience significant industrial growth, predicting an expansion of manufacturing activities across the five South-Eastern states.
His intervention has added a prominent voice to the ongoing debate over foreign participation in Nigeria’s retail sector, the protection of indigenous businesses and the need for greater industrial development in the South-East.
The allegations, however, remain claims by Okechukwu and would require independent evidence to establish whether government policy was deliberately designed to undermine Igbo businesses.
