Trump Takes 2016 Election Conspiracy Battle Against Hillary Clinton To Supreme Court
President Donald Trump has asked the US Supreme Court to revive his dismissed lawsuit accusing Hillary Clinton, James Comey and others of conspiring to link his 2016 campaign to Russia.
A federal judge dismissed the case as frivolous and ordered Trump and his lead lawyer, Alina Habba, to pay nearly $1 million in legal fees and costs.
The 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the dismissal and sanctions in 2025, faulting Trump and his lawyer over several frivolous legal arguments.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation found extensive Russian interference in the 2016 election but did not establish that Trump’s campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in those activities.

October 10, () – US President Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to revive his dismissed lawsuit accusing former Democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton, former FBI Director, James Comey, and other political opponents of conspiring to undermine his 2016 presidential campaign by linking it to Russia.
Trump filed the appeal on Friday, challenging lower court rulings that dismissed the lawsuit and imposed nearly $1 million in sanctions against him and his lead lawyer, Alina Habba, for pursuing what a federal judge described as a frivolous case intended to advance a political narrative.
recalls the lawsuit, filed in 2022 after Trump left office following his defeat by Democrat, Joe Biden, in the 2020 presidential election, accused Clinton and her allies of orchestrating a scheme to discredit his campaign by promoting what he called a false narrative of collusion with Russia.

The complaint, lodged in a federal court in Florida, named Clinton, Comey, former British intelligence officer, Christopher Steele, the Democratic National Committee and several other individuals and organisations.
Trump alleged that the defendants conspired to damage his political prospects ahead of the 2016 election, when he defeated Clinton despite losing the national popular vote.

The lawsuit included claims of racketeering, conspiracy to commit injurious falsehood and other alleged legal violations.
The Republican president has repeatedly described investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election as a political hoax and has maintained that his campaign was unfairly targeted.

Judge Calls Lawsuit A Political Manifesto
US District Judge, Donald Middlebrooks, dismissed Trump’s lawsuit, citing numerous legal deficiencies, including the fact that Trump had waited too long to bring some of the claims.
In his ruling, Middlebrooks likened the complaint to a “two-hundred-page political manifesto outlining his grievances against those that have opposed him.”
The judge subsequently ordered Trump and Habba to pay nearly $1 million in legal fees and costs, concluding that the lawsuit was intended “to dishonestly advance a political narrative”.
Middlebrooks also faulted Trump and his legal team for what he described as abusive litigation tactics, knowingly false factual allegations and frivolous legal theories.
The judge characterised the case as part of a continuing pattern of misuse of the courts.
Trump and Habba challenged the decisions, but the Atlanta-based 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the dismissal and sanctions in 2025.
“Many of Trump’s and Habba’s legal arguments were indeed frivolous”, the appeals court stated.
In subsequent court filings, lawyers for Trump and Habba argued that the lower courts’ decisions were having a “profound impact on the presidency, and the nation as a whole.”
Their latest appeal seeks to persuade the Supreme Court to intervene and allow the lawsuit to proceed despite the adverse rulings.
Mueller Report Documented Russian Interference
The legal dispute is rooted in the controversy surrounding Russia’s alleged efforts to influence the 2016 US presidential election.
Mueller, appointed by the Justice Department as special counsel, issued his report in 2019 after investigating Russian interference and possible links between Moscow and Trump’s campaign.
The report stated that Russia “interfered in the 2016 presidential election in sweeping and systematic fashion.”
It also documented numerous links between Russia and individuals associated with Trump’s campaign, noting that the campaign expected to benefit from Russia’s efforts to influence the election.
However, Mueller stated that his investigation did not establish that Trump’s campaign conspired or coordinated with the Russian government in its election interference activities.
Trump has repeatedly cited that finding to reject allegations of collusion, while describing the broader investigation as politically motivated.
In 2019, Trump’s then-Attorney General, William Barr, appointed another special counsel, John Durham, to investigate potential misconduct by the FBI in its handling of the Russia inquiry.
Durham’s 2023 report concluded that the FBI lacked “actual evidence” to investigate Trump’s 2016 campaign and relied too heavily on information supplied by Trump’s political opponents.
The findings became central to Trump’s argument that the investigation was improperly initiated and politically driven.
Clinton Campaign, Steele Dossier At Centre Of Dispute
Steele, a former British intelligence officer, compiled a dossier containing allegations about links between Trump’s campaign and Russia while working for an opposition research firm hired by a law firm acting on behalf of Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee.
The dossier also contained other controversial allegations about Trump, which he denied.
The material became a major source of controversy during and after the 2016 election, with Trump and his allies arguing that it helped fuel an effort to discredit his campaign.
Clinton and the other defendants were accused in Trump’s civil complaint of participating in a broader effort to damage his political standing. Those allegations were rejected by the lower courts, which dismissed the case.
The lawsuit’s dismissal and the financial sanctions against Trump and Habba have since become separate points of contention in the legal battle.
Trump returned to the White House in 2025 after defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. He has continued to challenge investigations and legal actions involving his political opponents and his first presidential campaign.
His latest appeal seeks to reopen a case that lower courts concluded was legally deficient, renewing the dispute over the origins and handling of the Russia investigation.
