Tom Cruise’s Daughter Suri Joins Growing List Of Celebrity Children Dropping Famous Fathers’ Surnames

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ daughter, Suri, has officially changed her name to Suri Noelle, dropping the famous Cruise surname from her legal identity as she begins adulthood.
-
The 20-year-old college student now uses Noelle, her mother’s middle name, as her surname, with public records confirming the change after she previously used the name at her high school graduation.
-
Suri’s decision comes after years of living a private life with her mother, Katie Holmes, following her parents’ 2012 divorce and their limited public appearances together.
-
Her name change also reflects a wider Hollywood trend, with other celebrity children, including some of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s children, choosing to use their mothers’ surnames or move away from their fathers’ names.
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ daughter, Suri, has legally changed her name from Suri Cruise to Suri Noelle, officially dropping her father’s surname.
The 20-year-old college student now uses Noelle, her mother Katie Holmes’ middle name, as her surname.
Public voter registration records obtained by PEOPLE in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where she attends Carnegie Mellon University, list her under the name Suri Noelle.

Suri first used the name publicly in 2024 during her high school graduation, where she was identified as Suri Noelle instead of Suri Cruise. The latest records confirm that the name change has since become official.
Cruise and Holmes welcomed Suri in April 2006 and divorced in 2012. Following their separation, Suri was raised mainly by Holmes in New York and has largely stayed away from public attention.

Reports over the years have indicated that Suri and Cruise have had little public contact since the divorce, with the pair not seen together publicly for more than a decade. Her decision to use the Noelle surname comes as she begins adulthood and creates an identity separate from her famous father.
Holmes has occasionally spoken about her daughter, describing her as an incredible person and expressing pride as she started college. The actress has also dismissed reports about Suri’s finances, including claims that she inherited a trust fund from Cruise.
A Growing Hollywood Trend
Suri’s decision is part of a wider trend among celebrity children who have chosen to use different surnames as they grow older. Some have adopted their mothers’ names publicly, while others have taken legal steps to change their identities.
The Jolie-Pitt Family

The children of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have also drawn attention for similar surname changes, with some choosing to use their mother’s surname publicly or taking steps to change their names as they entered adulthood.
Shiloh Jolie was the first of the siblings to take legal action, filing to remove “Pitt” from her surname shortly after turning 18 in 2024. Other siblings, including Vivienne, Zahara and Maddox, have also used the Jolie surname in public appearances, school activities or professional settings.
The surname changes have drawn attention following years of public focus on Pitt and Jolie’s divorce and family life. However, the children have not publicly shared all the personal reasons behind their decisions.
While every family situation is different, the choices made by Suri and the Jolie-Pitt children have renewed conversations about identity, family names and the experiences of children growing up in the public eye.
Neither Tom Cruise nor Katie Holmes has publicly commented on Suri’s legal name change.
