Tinubu Tasks NLNG To Make Cooking Gas Cheaper For Nigerians

• President Bola Tinubu has urged NLNG to increase domestic gas utilisation and ensure Nigeria’s gas wealth translates into more affordable cooking gas.

• NLNG says 100 percent of its cooking gas production already goes to the Nigerian market and that Train 7 will increase its domestic supply capacity by 50 percent.

August 27, () — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG) to deepen domestic gas utilisation and help bring down the cost of cooking gas for Nigerian households.

The President made the call on Wednesday while receiving the Board of Directors and Executive Leadership of NLNG, led by its Managing Director, Adeleye Falade, at the State House in Abuja.

Tinubu said Nigeria’s vast gas resources would have limited value if they remained underground or failed to improve the lives of citizens. He therefore urged NLNG to balance its pursuit of higher international revenues with the need to increase domestic gas availability and affordability.

Tinubu Wants Gas Flaring Turned Into Value

The President specifically called on NLNG to find ways of converting gas currently being flared into an economic resource, rather than allowing it to remain an environmental liability.

“I am inspired to understand that you are not limiting yourselves to the gradual objective of upgrading. My major concern is the domestic utilisation”, Tinubu said.

He acknowledged NLNG’s efforts to benefit from growing international demand but stressed that the company’s expansion should also deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians.

“Yes, you are doing great to really want the revenue up and taking advantage of international interest to build up what Nigeria might derive in benefits, but help us back home”, he said.

Tinubu also pledged that his administration would provide any additional incentives required to support NLNG’s growth and capacity expansion, provided the benefits extend to the wider economy.

Train 7 To Boost Domestic Supply By 50 Percent

Responding to the President, Falade said domestic energy security remained central to NLNG’s operations, noting that the company currently directs all its cooking gas production to the Nigerian market.

“100 percent of our cooking gas in Nigeria comes into the Nigerian market, and nothing is going to change from that”, he said.

He said the company’s ongoing Train 7 project would significantly increase its capacity and strengthen domestic gas availability.

According to Falade, Train 7 is currently under construction and has about 16,000 people working on the project. He said its completion would increase NLNG’s capacity to supply cooking gas to the domestic market by 50 percent.

“So the cooking gas that Mr President said we should think about, we will add 50 percent capacity to that when Train 7 comes on”, he said.

More Supply Does Not Automatically Mean Cheaper Gas

The planned increase in NLNG’s domestic supply could strengthen availability, but greater production alone does not guarantee lower prices for consumers.

The final price households pay also depends on transportation, storage, distribution costs, exchange-rate movements, and other parts of the downstream supply chain.

Tinubu’s intervention therefore focuses not only on how much gas Nigeria produces, but on whether the country can build a supply and distribution system capable of delivering that gas to households at affordable prices.

The President also urged NLNG to continue expanding its contribution to energy security, employment and government revenue while ensuring that Nigeria’s gas resources generate broader economic benefits.
