The House of Representatives descended into a rowdy session on Tuesday following a heated debate over the alleged non-funding of constituency projects across the country, with lawmakers sharply divided over the best approach to address the issue.
The tension began when Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, who represents Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency of Abia State, presented a motion calling on the House to summon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to explain the persistent failure to release funds for constituency projects.
The motion received support from another lawmaker, who further proposed an amendment seeking the suspension of legislative activities for one week until the funding issue is comprehensively addressed.
However, the proposals immediately sparked intense opposition on the floor of the Green Chamber. Hon. Yusuf Gagdi argued that inviting the President was unnecessary, maintaining that the responsibility for implementing and funding constituency projects rests with the relevant government agencies rather than the Presidency. He also opposed the suggestion to suspend the House’s sittings for one week, describing the move as unjustified.
His counter-position drew strong resistance from opposition lawmakers, resulting in a heated exchange that quickly escalated into a chaotic session. Members shouted across the chamber, interrupted one another, and engaged in prolonged arguments as the debate became increasingly tense.
With the atmosphere growing more volatile, Speaker of the House, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, intervened in an effort to restore order. He directed that lawmakers should resolve the matter through a vote, allowing members to clearly state their positions on the contentious motion.
The dramatic exchange underscored the growing concerns among federal lawmakers over delays in the funding of constituency projects, an issue that continues to generate debate within the National Assembly.
