Nollywood Mourns as Veteran Actor Francis Duru Dies After Brief Illness
The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru, who reportedly passed away after a brief illness, according to an announcement by his family.
The family announced the tragic development in the early hours of Friday through the actor’s official Instagram page, expressing gratitude to fans, colleagues and well-wishers for their prayers, love and support during the difficult period.

The heartbreaking announcement has sparked renewed sadness among admirers of the celebrated actor, whose decades-long career helped shape Nigeria’s film industry and earned him a special place in the hearts of movie lovers.
Duru’s death comes months after concerns emerged over his health following the circulation of a social media video in June showing him looking frail. The footage triggered widespread speculation about his condition, prompting the actor to publicly dismiss reports that he was battling a life-threatening illness. At the time, he described the video as fabricated and malicious.

Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru developed a passion for acting that would eventually establish him as one of Nollywood’s recognisable faces. He completed his primary and secondary education in Cameroon before relocating to Nigeria for his university education.

He gained admission to the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he studied Theatre Arts and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996.
Duru began his acting career in 1989, featuring in Missing Mark, a film directed by the late filmmaker Ndubuisi Oko. However, his breakthrough came in 1995 when he starred as Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the acclaimed action-comedy produced by the late Amaka Igwe. His performance helped bring him wider recognition and laid the foundation for a remarkable career in the Nigerian film industry.
Over the years, Duru distinguished himself through his versatility, screen presence and ability to bring diverse characters to life. His contributions to Nollywood earned him several awards and honours, while his influence extended beyond entertainment.
He was also named a United Nations ambassador of peace in recognition of his influence on young people and his broader impact on society.
In 2020, the veteran actor added another milestone to his career when he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.
Away from the screen, Duru built a family with his wife, Adokiye, whom he married in 2003. Their marriage was blessed with four children.
However, the family suffered a painful loss in August 2024 when one of their children, Ifeanyi, died.
His passing marks another significant loss for Nollywood, an industry that has relied on the dedication and talent of performers who helped build its reputation across Africa and beyond. For many fans, Duru will be remembered not only for his memorable roles but also for his enduring contribution to the growth and development of Nigerian cinema.
As tributes emerge, his legacy lives on through the films he featured in, the characters he portrayed and the generations of movie lovers who followed his journey on screen.
May his soul rest in perfect peace.
