Nigeria Congratulates Bangladesh’s President-Elect

 

The  Federal Government has congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as the 23rd President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, conveyed Nigeria’s congratulatory message on behalf of the government and people of Nigeria.

Alamgir emerged victorious in the presidential election conducted by the Jatiya Sangsad, Bangladesh’s Parliament, securing 255 votes against the 88 votes polled by his opponent, Colonel (Rtd.) Oli Ahmad.

His emergence marks Bangladesh’s first contested presidential election in 35 years, a development Nigeria described as significant in the country’s democratic and political journey.

Nigeria commended the people and institutions of Bangladesh for the peaceful conduct of the electoral process and expressed confidence that the president-elect would provide purposeful leadership capable of promoting national unity, political stability, democratic governance and sustainable development.

The Federal Government noted that Nigeria and Bangladesh enjoy cordial relations founded on mutual respect, shared interests and a common commitment to international cooperation and multilateralism.

It added that both countries, as developing nations and members of the Global South, share interests in sustainable development, economic growth, food and energy security, climate action and stronger South-South cooperation.

Nigeria said it was ready to work with the incoming administration to broaden bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, education, information and communications technology, healthcare, culture and people-to-people exchanges.

The Federal Government also acknowledged Bangladesh’s contributions to regional and global affairs and reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation through the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and other multilateral platforms.

As Alamgir prepares to assume office, Nigeria wished him good health, wisdom and success, expressing hope that his leadership would advance peace, stability, prosperity and sustainable development in Bangladesh.

Nigeria also extended its best wishes to the government and people of Bangladesh for continued peace, unity and national progress.
