Lagos Leaders Urge Federal Government to Restore Powers to Traditional Institutions

The Chairman of Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA, Hammed Aroyewun, has called on the Federal Government to amend the constitution to grant traditional rulers a more active role in governance.

Aroyewun made the demand on Sunday during the 10th coronation anniversary thanksgiving service of the Adeboruwa of Igbogbo Kingdom, Oba Semiudeen Kasali.

According to him, monarchs remain central to development at the grassroots but are currently restricted to ceremonial duties under the present constitutional framework.

“I advocate for our traditional rulers to be given real responsibility in governance and community development, as it used to be,” Aroyewun said. “Right now, Kabiyesi functions mainly as a ceremonial head. Yet, no development takes place in any community without their input, even though the constitution does not recognize them in it.”

He commended Oba Kasali for his decade on the throne, noting that the monarch has worked to revive cultural values and promote peace in Igbogbo Kingdom.

“Kabiyesi has safeguarded our culture and traditions. He has revived practices that were abandoned and used them to bring peace, unity and progress to Igbogbo and its people,” he said.

Former Lagos State House of Assembly member, Adebimpe Akinsola, also supported the call. She said traditional institutions remain the closest to the people and should be strengthened.

“In the past, governance began with traditional rulers. They understand every part of the community. Government should empower them to oversee their domains,” Akinsola stated.

Also speaking, former Igbogbo/Baiyeku LCDA Chairman, Olusesan Daini, said traditional rulers possess local knowledge that can aid effective governance.
“They should be supported because they do not have the same resources as government. Giving them maximum support will help them perform their duties better,” he said.

In his goodwill message, former Deputy Rector of LASUSTECH, Olasunkanmi Longe, applauded Oba Kasali for merging his legal expertise with traditional leadership.
“Your Majesty has blended the dignity of the legal profession with the responsibilities of the throne. Your dedication to justice and fairness has ensured peace and order in the kingdom,” he said.

The event was attended by community leaders, government officials and traditional rulers who gathered to mark 10 years of Oba Kasali’s reign.
