ASML Equipment Shortage Threatens To Slow Artificial Intelligence Expansion
ASML reported 11.7 billion euros in quarterly sales and 5 billion euros in net income.
The chipmaking equipment supplier expects demand to exceed planned capacity in 2027 and 2028.
Some semiconductor manufacturers are seeking delivery slots for 2029 and 2030.
Strong machine sales reflect heavy upfront investment but do not guarantee that every artificial intelligence project will earn a profit.

October 14, () – Before an artificial intelligence company can expand computing power, semiconductor factories must manufacture processors. Before those factories can make chips, they need specialised lithography machines from suppliers like ASML.
That foundation of the global technology supply chain is seeing customer demand stretch far beyond current production capacity.
The Dutch technology manufacturer stated on October 14 that its planned supply will fall short of customer requirements in both 2027 and 2028.

Some buyers are already asking to reserve delivery slots for 2029 and 2030, though those early discussions do not count as completed purchases.

ASML builds lithography systems, which use focused light beams to print complex microscopic circuits onto silicon wafers.
These printed patterns create the internal architecture that allows advanced processors to function. Its equipment sits directly upstream from the processing chips that run artificial intelligence programs.
That position makes the company’s financial figures a reliable gauge for measuring real technology infrastructure investment.
A software service gaining users shows current consumer interest. Corporate spending on manufacturing machinery shows companies committing hard capital to build future capacity.
Neither metric proves on its own that the resulting digital services will operate profitably.
Rising Sales Reflect Expanding Factory Requirements

ASML generated €11.7 billion in third-quarter sales and €5 billion in net income. The company projects total full-year sales between €44 billion and €45 billion.
The Chief Executive Officer, Christophe Fouquet, noted that customers continue raising short-term and medium-term equipment forecasts, attributing that trend to long-term artificial intelligence investment plans.
A specific financial detail affected the quarterly net income calculation. The €5 billion profit figure included a €500 million gain from revaluing ASML’s equity stake in French artificial intelligence developer Mistral. That portion of earnings came from investment valuation rather than machine deliveries.
Meanwhile, previously announced factory expansion targets may prove insufficient. ASML had planned to increase production capacity by 30 percent in 2027 and another 30 percent in 2028, but company leadership now expects market demand to exceed those expanded targets.
What Long Delivery Schedules Mean For Market Investors

For African investors following global stock markets, ASML provides a clear boundary between hardware infrastructure spending and the money made from running software services.
A semiconductor foundry can order lithography machinery years before building a factory line. A cloud data centre provider can then buy microprocessors and rent out server capacity.
Much later in that chain, an enterprise customer decides whether an artificial intelligence tool saves enough money or creates enough revenue to justify its operating expense.
High equipment sales demonstrate that major tech companies are spending heavily on physical hardware. They do not resolve whether every business down the line will make money on those investments.
ASML’s upcoming quarterly guidance sets a nearer benchmark for its near-term business. The company expects fourth-quarter sales between €14.2 billion and €15.2 billion.
Those figures will show how much current demand converts into recorded revenue before investors judge the longer order queue extending toward 2030.
