Akwa Ibom State government has called on mortgage institutions, developers and other stakeholders to improve access to housing finance in the state.
In a ministerial press briefing in Uyo on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Housing, Henry Okon Archibong further called for a responsible private-sector participation that would expand the supply of affordable homes and curb the issue of housing deficit in the state.
While calling for collaboration, the Commissioner said government has so far embarked on the construction of 1,048 housing units which are at various stages of development or delivery across key sectors of the State’s housing programme.

He listed the housing programmes to include the Aviation Village, the Medical City, Judiciary Quarters, Arise City Housing Scheme, Grace Estate, Ewet Luxury Estate, The Executive and Legislative Quarters and the Arise Compassionate Home.
According to him, ”As a Ministry, we recognize that the Housing deficit remains a significant challenge. We also acknowledge that government alone cannot solve every aspect of the housing challenges.
“That is why we are strengthening collaboration with mortgage institutions, professional bodies, developers and other stakeholders to improve access to housing finance, encourage responsible private-sector participation and expand the supply of affordable homes.”
Archibong added that the state government has acquired 150 hectares of land across seven locations for eight housing programmes in different Local Councils for housing development.
The programme Archibong said is designed to address the housing needs of different categories of people adding that the projects have created economic opportunities with at least 6,000 people benefiting directly and indirectly through employment and related economic activities.”

It extends to artisans, labourers, suppliers, transporters, food vendors, POS and other small businesses that depend on construction activities. This is one of the reasons we regard housing as both a social intervention and an economic-development tool.” He concluded.
