Abia State has once again produced a corporate leader of global standing as Mr. Emmanuel Nwabuikwu “Emma” Nnorom, a distinguished son of Ovim in Isuikwuato Local Government Area, has been appointed the next Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc.
Born on April 7, 1958, Emmanuel Nnorom is one of Nigeria’s most accomplished banking and business executives, with an outstanding career spanning banking, finance, investment management and corporate leadership. His appointment marks another significant milestone for Abia State, as one of its illustrious sons takes the helm of one of Africa’s largest financial institutions.
Nnorom will officially assume office on August 21, succeeding outgoing Chairman Tony Elumelu, who is completing the maximum 12-year tenure for non-executive directors as stipulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Here are seven important things to know about the incoming UBA Chairman.
1. He is an illustrious son of Abia State:
Emmanuel Nnorom hails from Ovim Community in Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State. Over the years, he has built a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most respected corporate leaders, bringing honour to his community and the state through decades of exemplary service in the financial and business sectors.
2. He is succeeding one of Africa’s most celebrated banker:
Beginning August 21, Nnorom will take over the leadership of UBA’s Board from Tony Elumelu, ushering in a new era for the banking giant after Elumelu’s successful 12-year tenure as Chairman.
3. He has an impressive history of leadership within UBA:
Long before joining the UBA Board as a Non-Executive Director in 2024, Nnorom had already established himself as one of the institution’s most experienced executives. During more than eight years in executive management, he served as Group Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director (Group Executive Office), Executive Director (Finance), Executive Director (Risk), and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa.
4. He played a major role in UBA’s expansion across Africa:
As Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA Africa, Nnorom supervised the bank’s operations across several African countries, helping to deepen UBA’s footprint and strengthen its position as a leading pan-African financial institution.
5. He currently leads one of Africa’s foremost investment companies:
Since June 2017, Nnorom has served as the Group Chief Executive Officer of Heirs Holdings, where he oversees investments spanning financial services, healthcare, power, energy, hospitality, real estate and technology, contributing significantly to the growth of one of Africa’s leading investment groups.
6. He previously headed Transcorp:
Before joining Heirs Holdings, Nnorom served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Transnational Corporation Plc (Transcorp) between September 2014 and May 2017. During his tenure, he supervised strategic investments across the power, agriculture, hospitality and energy sectors.
7. He now leads one of Africa’s biggest banking institutions:
With his appointment, Emmanuel Nnorom assumes responsibility for providing strategic leadership to UBA, a leading African bank with operations in more than 20 African countries and an international presence in the United Kingdom, the United States, France and the United Arab Emirates.
