Nigerian Final-Year Medical Student Dies After Russian Airstrike Days Before Graduation
Tragedy has struck as a final-year Nigerian medical student at Kharkiv National Medical University, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died after suffering severe injuries sustained during a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine.
The heartbreaking development was disclosed by Ukrainian commentator Kateryna Bohuslavska, popularly known as “Kate from Kharkiv,” who revealed that the 23-year-old was critically injured during a Russian aerial bomb attack on the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv on June 29, 2026.
According to Bohuslavska, Adaobi and her close friend, Fatima Huseynova, were on their way to a graduation photoshoot just one day before they were scheduled to receive their medical degrees when the devastating attack occurred.
Huseynova reportedly died at the scene of the bombing, while Adaobi was rushed for emergency treatment in Kharkiv before being transferred to Germany for advanced medical care. Despite the efforts of doctors to save her life, she succumbed to her injuries on July 5, 2026.
The news has sparked an outpouring of grief from colleagues, classmates and members of the international academic community.
Paying tribute to the late student, Kharkiv National Medical University described Adaobi as a brilliant, hardworking and compassionate individual who joined the institution in 2020 and consistently distinguished herself through academic excellence.
The university noted that she expanded her knowledge and professional experience through international medical internships at the University of Cambridge in 2024 and Biruni University in Turkey in 2025, where she further developed her clinical and research skills.
The institution also stated that Adaobi would be remembered as a talented student, a kind person and an invaluable member of the Kharkiv National Medical University family, while extending its deepest condolences to her family, friends and classmates.
