2027: Anyaso Woos Ex-Abia Lawmaker Chukwudi Apugo to Labour Party, Seeks Stronger Support for Gov. Otti’s Re-election
The Labour Party candidate for Bende Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections, Dr. Chimaobi Desmond Anyaso, has intensified his grassroots political consultations with a renewed push to strengthen the Labour Party’s structure ahead of the next general elections by appealing to former member of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Chukwudi Apugo, to join the party.
The high-level political engagement took place on Friday when Dr. Anyaso led a delegation to the country home of the former lawmaker at Nkata Ibeku in Umuahia North Local Government Area, where discussions centered on the future of Abia politics, the achievements of Governor Dr. Alex Otti’s administration, and the need for political leaders to unite in sustaining the state’s ongoing transformation.
Addressing Hon. Apugo during the visit, Dr. Anyaso described the Labour Party as the most credible platform for leaders committed to selfless service, accountability, and good governance. He maintained that Governor Alex Otti’s administration has repositioned Abia State through visionary leadership and developmental projects that have restored confidence in governance.
According to him, individuals with integrity and a genuine desire to serve the people should identify with the Labour Party to consolidate the achievements already recorded by the present administration.
“I came to tell you that this is the time to join us. We have a Governor who has placed Abia on the global map and transformed the fortunes of our people for good,” Anyaso said.
The Labour Party standard-bearer further stressed that politics should remain an avenue for service rather than personal enrichment, noting that members of his political family are driven by a passion to improve the lives of the people.
“We have seen the light. Abia is working, and there is no reason to support any political platform that seeks to derail the progress already achieved. Governor Alex Otti needs people who are intentional about serving the people,” he added.
In his response, Hon. Chukwudi Apugo, who represented Umuahia East State Constituency in the Abia State House of Assembly, openly commended the administration of Governor Alex Otti, citing his personal experience as evidence of the government’s responsiveness.
He disclosed that despite his previous position in government, he was unable to secure the Certificate of Occupancy for his privately owned school until the current administration came into office.
“The Certificate of Occupancy for my school, which I could not obtain while I was in power, was approved under Governor Alex Otti’s administration,” Apugo stated.
The former lawmaker also expressed dissatisfaction with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, alleging that he was politically sidelined after the last House of Representatives election.
He further declared that he would not support any APC candidate contesting for a National Assembly seat in the 2027 general elections, a statement widely viewed by political observers as a significant indication of shifting political alliances ahead of the polls.
Earlier in the meeting, the Director-General of the Chima Anyaso Campaign Organization, Pastor Okechukwu Dike, explained that the purpose of the visit was to formally seek Hon. Apugo’s support for the Labour Party and Governor Alex Otti’s re-election bid in 2027.
He expressed optimism that the former lawmaker’s eventual decision to join the Labour Party would further strengthen the party’s political base in Ibeku and across Bende Federal Constituency.
Also speaking during the visit, Labour Party chieftain and former Chief of Staff to a former Governor of Abia State, Prof. ACB Agbazuere, appealed to Hon. Apugo to align with the Labour Party, describing Governor Alex Otti’s administration as one that has continued to attract widespread public support because of its developmental strides.
Agbazuere maintained that Governor Otti’s performance has earned him the confidence of many Abians and emphasized that supporting the continuity of the administration would serve the overall interest of the state as preparations gradually gather momentum fo
r the 2027 general elections.
