Baze University Acquires Two Aircraft For Aviation School In Abuja
Baze University, Abuja, has acquired two aircraft for its aviation school in Bwari, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as part of plans to train more than 600 aviation professionals. The pro-chancellor of the university, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, disclosed this late Friday after the aircraft received a traditional water-cannon salute at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.Baba-Ahmed said the acquisition would strengthen aviation training, promote national development and boost Nigeria’s manpower capacity in the sector.According to him, the university plans to train at least 600 professionals in specialised areas, including air traffic control, air rescue and fire-fighting, subject to approval by relevant regulatory authorities, in addition to its approved degree programmes. He said Baze University graduates were already gaining recognition in Nigeria, Europe, the United States and some African countries, expressing confidence that the aviation school would further enhance the country’s international reputation.“Baze Aviation School is going to uplift the integrity of Nigeria across the world. The institution will enable us to command and control geography in Nigeria. It is a blessed institution to consider our aviation alongside our agricultural potential, solid minerals, and oil and gas,” he said.Baba-Ahmed added that the university intended to deliver an aerodrome hub measuring 1,800 metres by 30 metres, with an additional 15 metres, at the heart of Abuja.Earlier, the coordinator of the Aviation School, retired Air Vice Marshal Aliyu Bello, said the two aircraft would be deployed for practical flight training and to expand the institution’s aviation operations. He said the university was preparing to commence flight training, which would expose students to hands-on experience alongside classroom and ground-school instruction.Bello also said the institution was developing a dedicated aviation facility on a large expanse of land in Bwari, comprising a runway, hangar, terminal building, laboratories and simulation centres. He disclosed that the National Universities Commission (NUC) had approved two full-time undergraduate programmes for the university, effective from the 2026/2027 academic session. The programmes are Aviation Management under the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences and Aerospace Engineering under the Faculty of Engineering. The vice-chancellor of the university, Prof. Abiodun Adeniyi, said Baze University would become the first private university in Africa to operate its own aviation school.
