Palantir’s Commercial AI Business Overtakes US Government Revenue

Palantir’s Commercial AI Business Overtakes US Government Revenue

Palantir’s US commercial revenue reached $984 million in Q3 2026, overtaking US government revenue of $953 million for the first time.

Total quarterly revenue jumped 96% year-on-year to $2.31 billion, above Wall Street estimates.

US commercial revenue rose 148%, making enterprise AI the fastest-growing part of Palantir’s business.

Yet US commercial contract value growth slowed to 11%, raising questions about how long the current pace can hold.

November 3, () – Palantir has crossed a line few would have expected from a company once defined mainly by government and defence contracts: American businesses now generate more revenue for it than the US government.

The software company reported $984 million in US commercial revenue for the third quarter of 2026, up 148% from a year earlier and ahead of the $953 million generated from US government customers. It is the first time Palantir’s commercial business has overtaken its government business in the United States.

Overall revenue climbed 96% to $2.31 billion, beating analysts’ average estimate of $2.18 billion. Palantir also raised its full-year revenue forecast to between $8.530 billion and $8.534 billion, while expecting fourth-quarter revenue of roughly $2.65 billion.

Palantir’s US commercial business expanded much faster than its government business during the quarter.

Commercial revenue rose 148% year-on-year, compared with 96% growth in US government revenue. Combined US revenue reached $1.94 billion, up 119%.

Customer growth is helping. Palantir reported 1,090 customers over the 12 months to September, including 904 commercial clients, as companies increasingly adopted its software to combine proprietary data with AI models while retaining more control over sensitive information.

CEO Alex Karp said demand for Palantir’s AI products was larger than the company could currently service, describing the market as still expanding rapidly.

That matters because Palantir spent years carrying the perception that its commercial opportunity would remain secondary to government and defence work. The latest quarter weakens that assumption.

Revenue Is Soaring, Yet One Sales Signal Slowed

Not every metric moved at the same speed.

US commercial contract value grew 11% year-on-year to about $1.46 billion, a dramatic slowdown from more than 153% growth in the previous quarter. That measure tracks the value of contracts signed rather than revenue already recognised.

Palantir still closed 212 deals worth at least $1 million, including 107 worth at least $5 million and 64 worth at least $10 million. Adjusted free cash flow reached $1.22 billion, equivalent to a 53% margin.

Investors nevertheless pushed the shares lower after the results, reflecting the unusually high expectations already embedded in Palantir’s valuation.

The contradiction is important. Palantir is growing at a pace rarely seen among companies of its size, yet markets are no longer asking only whether AI demand is strong.

They are asking how long growth this fast can continue.

For Palantir, the shift from government-heavy revenue to commercial AI does more than diversify the business. It gives investors a clearer test of whether enterprise spending on artificial intelligence can produce durable revenue long after the first wave of AI experimentation fades.
