Rep Idem Delivers 60 Units Of Solar Lights To Akwa Ibom NUJ Press Centre

• Solar-powered street lights delivered two months after lawmaker’s commitment to NUJ

• Project expected to improve security and visibility around Press Centre at night

• NUJ Chairman says gesture fulfils Idem’s promise made during 2025 electioneering

September 29, () – The Member representing Ukanafun/Oruk Anam Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep. Unyime Idem, has delivered 60 units of solar-powered street lights to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, for installation at the NUJ Press Centre in Uyo.

The items were delivered to the Union on Monday by Idem’s Special Assistant on General Duties, Ediong Charles, in fulfilment of a commitment made by the federal lawmaker to the NUJ about two months ago.

Charles said the gesture was part of Idem’s efforts to support initiatives aimed at improving the working environment and welfare of journalists in Akwa Ibom State.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Union, the NUJ Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, commended the lawmaker for fulfilling his promise.

John said the delivery had enabled him to fulfil a commitment he made to members of the Union during the 2025 electioneering that the Press Centre would be illuminated if Idem was elected.

The NUJ Chairman said the installation of the solar-powered lights would improve visibility and security around the Press Centre, particularly at night, while making the facility more accessible to journalists, media workers and visitors after working hours.

“This gesture is significant because it is not just about providing lights; it is about improving the safety and working environment of journalists who use the Press Centre, especially at night. We appreciate Rep. Idem for keeping his word and responding to a practical need of the Union”, John said.

He added that the Union would maintain a cordial relationship with the lawmaker and continue to support initiatives that advance journalism and the welfare of media practitioners in the state.

Also present during the handover were the Secretary of the State Council, Nsikak Esenowo; Financial Secretary, Kufre Emmanuel; Auditor, Dianime Uko; Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, Emmanuel Akpan; Chairman of the Press Centre Management Committee, Edifon Solomon; and a member of the Union, Simeon Akwa.

According to the Chairman, installation of the solar-powered street lights is expected to commence immediately.
