Falconets Storm Into U-20 World Cup Quarter-Finals After Crushing England 3-0
Nigeria’s Falconets have powered their way into the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland after producing a commanding 3-0 victory over England in a thrilling Round of 16 encounter on Thursday.
The emphatic triumph saw Nigeria brush aside England in impressive fashion, with Tosin Rafiu, Janet Akekoromowei and Mercy Mamudu getting on the scoresheet to propel the Falconets into the last eight and keep Africa’s hopes alive in the tournament.
Nigeria made their intentions clear from the opening minutes at the Stadion Miejski in Bielsko-Biała, taking the lead just eight minutes into the match.
Rafiu produced a moment of individual brilliance, charging down the left flank before skillfully weaving through the England defence and firing past goalkeeper Katie Cox to give the Falconets an early advantage.
England responded by controlling more of the possession and searching for an equaliser, but Nigeria remained dangerous whenever they moved forward, while goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma became increasingly important in protecting the lead.
Uzoma produced a crucial save to deny England forward Princess Ademiluyi before going on to deliver another outstanding moment when England were awarded a penalty.

England attempted to fight their way back into the contest, but Nigeria continued to create the more dangerous opportunities and maintained control of the game.
The decisive blow eventually arrived in the 73rd minute when Mamudu found the back of the net to make it 3-0, effectively putting the outcome beyond doubt and completing a thoroughly convincing victory for Moses Aduku’s side.
The result represents a remarkable turnaround for Nigeria, whose campaign had initially appeared uncertain after a difficult start in Group F.
The Falconets opened their group campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Spain before playing out a goalless draw against China, leaving them with only one point from their opening two matches and facing a crucial final group fixture.
Nigeria responded in spectacular fashion, dismantling New Caledonia 10-1 to finish second in Group F with four points and secure their passage into the knockout stage.
Ramotalahi Kareem and Winner Onajite David both scored hat-tricks in that remarkable victory, while Rebecca Adegbemile added two goals, with Akekoromowei and Rafiu also finding the net.
Having survived the group-stage setback, the Falconets have now followed up their attacking explosion against New Caledonia with another dominant performance against England, underlining their growing confidence as the tournament enters its decisive stages.
Nigeria, two-time runners-up at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, will now face the winner of the Poland-Colombia Round of 16 tie in Lodz on Sunday, with a place in the semi-finals at stake.
After overcoming a challenging beginning to the tournament and producing back-to-back emphatic victories, the Falconets are now within touching distance of the final four as they continue their quest for a historic first U-20 Women’s World Cup title.
