Amaokwe Item in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State came alive on Saturday, August 15, 2026, as hundreds of women, community leaders, dignitaries, and stakeholders gathered for the 2026 Amaokwe Item Women’s August Conference, a landmark event that celebrated womanhood, community development, and distinguished service.
Held at the Late Madam Jane Egbichi Oteh Mini Stadium, Central School Atanko, the conference was organized by the Women’s Wing of the Amaokwe Item Welfare Union (AIWU) under the theme, “Virtuous Woman: The Pillar of Society.” The event showcased the critical role of women in fostering family values, community progress, and societal stability.

A major highlight of the conference was the civic reception held in honour of the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Abia State, Chief Prof. Cliff Chilasa Agbaeze, (Akanchawa Item Okpi). The reception drew widespread attention as community members paid glowing tributes to the accomplished son of Amaokwe Item for his contributions to public service, agricultural development, and the advancement of his homeland.
The gathering provided an opportunity for residents and stakeholders to celebrate Prof. Agbaeze’s growing impact in the agricultural sector and his commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of rural communities. His recognition at the event underscored the pride of the Amaokwe Item people in one of their most distinguished sons, whose leadership continues to inspire the younger generation.
Another significant feature of the conference was a ₦25 million fundraising drive dedicated to the completion and equipping of the Cassava Cottage Building Project. The initiative attracted support from sons and daughters of the community, development partners, and well-wishers who rallied behind the project as part of efforts to strengthen local economic and agricultural activities.
The event also witnessed the presentation of awards to deserving individuals who have made remarkable contributions to community growth and development. The awards ceremony celebrated excellence, service, and dedication, reinforcing the conference’s commitment to honouring individuals who have positively impacted society.
Adding colour and excitement to the occasion were a series of cultural and competitive activities, including a march-past competition, drama presentations, and the highly anticipated cooking competition featuring traditional Oto delicacies prepared by various branches of the women’s organization. The competitions showcased the rich cultural heritage, creativity, and unity of the Amaokwe Item women.
Participants were further treated to a grand ladies’ banquet, creating an atmosphere of fellowship and celebration among women from different branches and communities. The conference later concluded with a thanksgiving service, where prayers were offered for continued peace, progress, and prosperity in Amaokwe Item and Abia State at large.
