July 20, () — Nigeria’s equities market began the week on a bullish note, with investors adding ₦1.756 trillion to market value as sustained buying interest across banking, insurance and industrial stocks pushed key market indicators higher.
The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) market capitalisation rose from ₦157.056 trillion at Monday’s opening to ₦158.812 trillion at the close of trading, while the All-Share Index (ASI) advanced from 243,462.13 basis points to 246,183.96 basis points.
The positive performance was underpinned by renewed demand for large-cap financial stocks and selective buying in industrial counters, extending the market’s upward momentum despite pockets of profit-taking across selected equities.
Market breadth closed marginally positive with 32 gainers against 31 losers, highlighting investors’ continued preference for fundamentally resilient stocks while locking in gains on recently appreciated counters.

Meanwhile, Seplat Energy Plc, Dangote Cement Plc, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Golden Guinea Breweries Plc, BUA Foods Plc and Nestlé Nigeria Plc, among other blue-chip stocks, closed flat for the session.
The day’s performance reflected renewed confidence in the financial services sector, with investors returning to banking and insurance counters following recent earnings optimism and continued expectations of resilient corporate performance. The rebound in BUA Cement also provided significant support for the broader market, helping offset losses recorded in selected mid-cap equities.
Investor sentiment remained upbeat, supported by the sharp increase in market capitalisation and renewed demand for heavyweight financial stocks. While profit-taking persisted in select counters, the strong performance of Custodian, First Holdco and BUA Cement suggests investors remain confident in quality stocks with solid earnings prospects and attractive long-term valuations.
The market is expected to maintain a positive bias in the near term as investors continue to rotate into fundamentally strong banking, insurance and industrial stocks. However, intermittent profit-taking in recently rallied counters could moderate the pace of gains in subsequent sessions.
